Occupy Oakland's cost to city soars
Source: SF Chron

Occupy Oakland's costs to its host city are growing - and no end is in sight.

As of Oct. 28, the city had already spent $1 million for police and public works costs related to the tent city in Frank Ogawa Plaza, and for replacing glass in public buildings that was smashed in a pair of protests. It hasn't totaled up its expenses since then, but they skyrocketed with Monday's police sweep to clear out the encampment outside City Hall.

The outside law enforcement agencies that sent officers to help Oakland police will charge a total of between $300,000 and $500,000, City Administrator Deanna Santana said.

The first time Oakland cleared the encampment Oct. 25, outside agencies picked up their own expenses. But not this time - because Mayor Jean Quan allowed the campers to return after the first sweep, the tent city at 14th Street and Broadway was considered a planned event rather than an emergency that would get the city off the hook financially.

2. And their heavy handed tactics are going to cost the city a fortune
in lawsuits by everyone from the ACLU to injured citizens like Scott Olsen.

If you can't shame them into behaving, maybe you can sue them into doing so.

The ACLU and the NLG have filed suit against the Oakland Police Department:

Today the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California (ACLU-NC) and the National Lawyers' Guild (NLG) filed a lawsuit in federal court against the Oakland Police Department (OPD) for its egregious constitutional violations against Occupy Oakland demonstrators. The lawsuit asks for an emergency temporary restraining order to stop police violence against political protesters. The restraining order is urgent because another police encounter with demonstrators is imminent, after the removal of the Occupy Oakland camp early this morning. The case is currently before United States District Court Judge Richard Seeborg, who immediately issued an order requiring the City to respond by 5pm tomorrow. If OPD uses excessive force against protesters again, it will need to justify its actions to the court.
