Flap over Oakland cop who covered name tag (at Occupy protest)
Source: SF Chronicle

The city of Oakland violated a federal consent decree to reform its Police Department when an officer at a recent Occupy Oakland protest was captured on videotape with the name on his uniform covered in black tape, an attorney said today.

Oakland should pay $5,100 in sanctions because of the incident, which was filmed by a civilian, attorney Jim Chanin said. The video shows Officer John Hargraves standing in uniform with black tape covering his first initial and last name.

City and police officials did not respond to requests for comment.

In the video, the camera operator tells Hargraves, "It's kind of weird that you actually are not showing your name, why is that? Simple question."

1. Had he been thinking quickly the cop could have claimed that he had to borrow someone else's uniform
or some such other lie.

2. I was watching a video where many had their name tags covered
and that question was asked many times. They refused to even speak to the questioner, nor look at him. I don't know if it was shame, fear, arrogance or some combo of the three.

3. Cal penal code 830.10. There are pics of many "police" with covered names
in GD, from at least two of the attacks upon #OccupyOakland, including last night/this morning.

4. Yes, I heard that thrown around a number of times
I wonder if Oakfosho is going to be up and running tonight. He was, despite the video gliches, a damn good citizen journalist last night.

6. Definitely, and he doesn't even know it. When he starts discussing the wrongs and
what must be done to make them right, he's on fire. He's shy about being complemented :)

8. You mean this guy?

He was not shy about confronting them. That takes a lot of balls given the OPD's reputation.
