Homeless moved for Obama NT visit
Source: SBS Australia

Homeless people are being moved away from Darwin's city centre ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit to the Northern Territory.

The traditional land owners, the Larrakia people, have been asked to encourage the homeless to leave places on the president's program.

Larrakia Nation chief executive Ilana Eldridge says the "gentle suggestion" has come from the Northern Territory government.

"When we go in, people know it is time to move, otherwise the cops will come in heavy-handed later," Ms Eldridge said.

And when Obama has left, they can all go back on the streets again.

You might think it a good idea to provide sheltered accommodation on a permanent basis.

5. How sad and humiliating.
I guess that it embarrasses the local politicians that a foreign leader would see their poor. Their behavior is far more shameful than being poor.

7. Good. They're very untidy.
Perhaps they can be fed to The Bankers at a splendid banquet.

Huzzah!

11. Because homeless milling around might spoil his optimistic speech?
Or because Obama doesn't like seeing them out the window of limo?

13. I think it's the N.T. and Australian governments who are embarrassed.
Some 30% of the population of the Territory are Aboriginals and Torres Straight Islanders, who are very much an underclass in the land of their forefathers.

How Obama would ever see them through the huge security net around him is a mystery (he has 200 Secret Service men, plus the Australian police, and nobody will get anywhere near him), but I guess they just can't take the smallest risk of shocking him. :sarcasm:

12. Well, the world's leaders must be spared even the slightest inconvenience these days.
Especially looking at the results of global poverty and economic marginalization.

15. Someone should tell them if he wants to see homeless people all he has to do is look out the window
of his own home..........

Pulling into Washing DC before dawn was heartbreaking. I've never seen so many homeless people sleeping on the streets and in the parks. It was Fall and not warm like this Fall has been. Seeing them sleeping in the park adjacent to the White house was infuriating. Surrounded by vast wealth and huge buildings that we all pay for... our brothers and sisters were sleeping under newspapers on a bench. Or like one, in a sleeping bag in the doorway of a massive church. How much wealth was inside that church?

20. Why Occupy exists. For stuff like this. Homelessness a natural outgrowth of this system.
People being run around like a herd of gazelles being preyed upon by prides of lions. The slow and the weak to be eaten alive.
