Supercommittee: Boehner calls tax plan fair offer

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Speaker John Boehner publicly blessed a Republican deficit-reduction plan Tuesday that would raise $300 billion in additional tax revenue while overhauling the IRS code, bucking opposition by some GOP presidential hopefuls and colleagues wary of violating a longstanding point of party orthodoxy.

Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, spoke as time grew perilously short for agreement by the deficit-fighting "supercommittee." The panel has until a week from Wednesday to vote on any compromise, but several officials said that in reality, perhaps as little as 48 or 72 hours are available to the six Republicans and six Democrats.

Prospects for a deal got even dimmer Tuesday evening as the top Republican on the debt panel, Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas, said his party's negotiators "have gone as far as we feel we can go" on tax hikes. He said on the CNBC cable network that the panel is "somewhat stymied."

Hensarling's counterpart, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said her party is still waiting on a "credible offer" from Republicans with larger tax increases.

3. The party will be fine if they raise taxes on our class.
Edited on Wed Nov-16-11 02:19 AM by JohnnyRingo
I don't know how they'll do it, but I've lived long enough to see this coming.
As I recall that was how Reagan did it. First he cut taxes for his buddies, than he made up some of the difference on us.

On edit: No where in the article does it say the Bush tax cuts will be reversed at all, and if Boner likes it....

4. Thats exactly what this proposal is
The r's objecting are either playing br'er rabbit or cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

The proposal is this: cut the top marginal rate by 7%. Cut the corporate tax rate. Shrink or remove deductions and credits that the rest of the population currently access. Think things like the mortgage interest deduction. Things that have to effect a massive number of people in order to more than make up for the new tax cuts for the rich without having to make any significant cuts to the defense budget.

5. In other words more tax cuts for the rich and higher taxes for the rest of us, plus reduced services
The greed of the one percent knows no bounds.

They are like Marie Antionette, hearing that the poor can't afford bread she proclaimed "let them eat cake!"
