I never would have seen this comic, had it not been censored. Nothing makes somthing more popular than to censor it.
People might make a big deal about it- bring comparisons to the Stern/ FCC, thing etc...
Gart's no fool- he did this to get people talking about this comic panel...

I'm wondering if Gary is going to go the whole way and have BD begin focusing on the important things in life or, conversely, have him "retreat into something else".

John Wesley Harding was supposed to play at the Peabody-Essex and lost the gig when the board got uptight over his song "Sluts," (which is not necessarily about loose women). http://www.johnwesleyharding.com/mb/board1/105.shtml

10. My paper CT Post (Bridgeport, CT) also pulled it |
|
They ran the Mallard Fillmore as usual: dissing Kerry over snowboard/Secret Service SOB comment -- incredible irony there.
Especially if you factor in Condosleaza Lice and her own willingness to accept responsibilty (another aspect of the MF strip).

Think that this is not that big a deal if the strip is published in a group with the rest of the comic strips. I wouldn't want my 7 year old reading Garfield, then Beetle Bailey, then "Son of a Bitch!" with her breakfast. However, because it is more political commentary than comic strip, newspapers should print it on the same page as editorials or letters to the editor. The vast majority of young kids don't read that section of the paper. Problem solved. Leaving it out of the paper entirely is just stupid.

They aren't censoring this because they are afraid |
|
that your seven-year-old will happen to read it. They are censoring it because everyone knows that all patriotic adults cannot bear to see this kind of pro-enemy propaganda. They are afraid that if something gets printed that might let the reader entertain one tiny thought that this war is not as originally advertised, the reader might just start to question the logic of this administration, and might just figure that the country that needs a regime change just might be us.

22. The Globe isn't like that, but they are hypocritical |
|
The Globe is probably the only daily in NE worth a damn, and they're pretty consistently editorially liberal and anti-war. But they embarrass themselves from time to time with this sort of crap, leaving themselves open to right-wing charges of hypocricy. They quite often use quotes in news stories with words like "bullshit", and then they ban their sportswriters from appearing on the local sports radio station because they find some of the content "offensive", and now this absurd nonsense. I'm sure the 7-year olds who always get a howl out of "Mallard Fillmore" need to be protected from the word "bitch", which is apparently only acceptable when referring to women in rap songs.

I think it was about a year ago. There was a Doonesbury strip dealing with W's medicare plan (or something like that) that included the phrase "Time to kick some terminally ill ass!" Did any papers pull that one?

26. Lafayette, Indiana "Journal and Courier" censored it. |
|
Posted a panel that said there "was language that some readers might find offensive" in today's strip and we could go to ucomix' web page if we wanted to read it.
Now, should I write a LTTE along the lines of "I didn't see anything in that strip that your typical Tippecanoe County resident would find offensive. Please tell me where they used the words 'George Bush' and 'War Criminal' in the same sentence"...
What a bunch of low-lifes. Like not printing the strip was gonna hide it anyway. But just wait, we'll have Mallard Fillmore, a whole fuckin' 1/2 page of him this Sunday...
