No raid at Occupy SF after city raises stakes
Source: SF Chronicle

Everything is quiet at the Occupy SF camp on Justin Herman Plaza, where a police raid that protesters feared would take place overnight never materialized.

Tensions between the city and protesters who have been sleeping on the plaza seemed to reach a crescendo Thursday afternoon. The city declared the camp a public health nuisance, and demonstrators called for a 10 p.m. rally.

Mayor Ed Lee told protesters that he wanted the camp reduced to no more than 100 tents and communal structures by 4 p.m. Thursday, down from the 200 or so that have been pitched there this week. People in a satellite camp outside the Federal Reserve Bank at 101 Market St. were given eviction notices.

Protesters removed some tents from the plaza, but well over 100 shelters remained. Occupy SF representatives braced for action, posting a notice on their website: "Police raid expected tonight!"

1. Well, we have gotten word from the WH about how violence won't be tolerated.

All anyone who wants to avoid violence at any Occupy site needs to do is wear a tee shirt or carry a sign proclaiming "I am an Egyptian!"

"I want to be very clear in calling upon the Egyptian authorities to refrain from violence against the protesters.

"The people of Egypt have rights that are universal. That includes the right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to free speech, and the ability to determine their own destiny.

These are human rights. And the United States

Will stand up for them everywhere."

Pres. Barack Obama

28 January 2011

Notice the President's use of the word "Everywhere."
