Man Arrested and Charged in Bomb Plot

The authorities have arrested a man who law enforcement officials believe was planning to build and detonate a bomb in New York with government workers, returning military personnel and elected officials as the target, a person briefed on the case said on Sunday.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly of the New York Police Department, and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. were expected to announce the charges against the man at 7:30 p.m. at a news conference at City Hall.

The defendant in the case, identified as Jose Pimentel, had bought bomb-making materials and “began to build them,” said the person briefed on the case, who added that the Police Department had had the man under surveillance for about a year.

The person briefed on the case described it as a “lone wolf scenario” and said that Mr. Pimentel had been considering a possible array of targets that included government employees, lawmakers and military personnel returning from overseas service.

My first response to any "news update" that involves the word "terrorist" is to dismiss it as more of the same security theater that has been in use for a decade now.

They are either made up completely or involve coercion, plants or some other manipulation. Its all made up to support the Military-Industrial-Security Complex, distract people and scare the ones who haven't burned out on being scared yet.

Anyone who is a tinkerer in electronics or chemistry would likely be charged as a bomb-maker in this brave new world. It has happened many times since 2001.

The thing is, it may indeed be partly or completely true. But I no longer believe that there is anything to these stories, it would take a lot of proof to convince me.

This is what crying wolf does, it completely obscures any real issues that might exist.

I notice that local government officials tend to dress down for things that are emergencies or meant to be seen as such. Not sure why.

When we have to boil water because something happened to our water supply, or there's a big fire, or a blizzard, our mayor or our Governor don't wear suits.

Shirt sleeves, or sweaters, or, on one occasion, a flannel shirt. (The flannel shirt was in connection with a late nigt fire in a nursing home in Boston. Perhaps it was supposed to be reminiscent of the Mayor's pajamas, which he was in when he heard about the fire?)

I don't know the thinking behind the choices, but I'd put a fair amount of money on a bet saying the wardrobe for this announcement was planned.

Since this man has been labeled a terrorist, he will never stand trail by his peers. Under the patriot act, he has no rights to habeas corpus. It is doubtful he will ever have his day in court; he has all ready been proven guilty by the judgments’ of a politician, who used this story as an excuse to spotlight himself in front of the people. Look at me, look at the bad man, he drilled holes in a pipe, we have an elaborate story of terrorism that he might have committed, thus he is guilty.
