John Neville, a veteran Canadian actor and stage director who appeared in a multitude of productions, including the hit TV series The X-Files, has died at the age of 86.

Neville, who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, died in Toronto Saturday surrounded by family, said a statement from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where Neville worked as an artistic director in the 1980s.

Neville appeared in dozens of movies, television shows and theatre productions during a career that spanned six decades.

His career experienced a big lift when he was cast in the title role in the 1988 film The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Although the film was a financial failure, Neville's performance was well-received and it led to a plethora of film and television roles.

6. I loved him in that role!
In the end, he did the right thing, if persuaded by slightly selfish reasons. Great character, superbly portrayed.

Quite a loss. :(

2. RIP Baron Munchausen
I loved him as the Baron. And there was another movie where he was an excellent Sherlock Holmes!

7. Some more great roles:
He played a holographic Sir Isaac Newton in a Star Trek: the Next Generation episode (1993) and General Staedert in The Fifth Element (1997). His page at IMDB.com has yet to be updated with his date of death, as of noon CST.

Farewell Mr. Neville and thank you for all the great performances you gave us!

8. Anyone remember Grand?
A short-lived cult TV show about 20 years ago. Neville played a butler/lifelong pal to the lecherous John Randolph and his house full of oddballs (daughter Bonnie Hunt, SIL Michael McKean, Maid Pamela Reed & her family). Great comedy.

9. That show has
the absolute best theme song ever.

Let me ask a question
You can take a guess
who holds the key to your happiness?
Is your life up to you,
or does fate have a plan?
Don't think too much, just do it
do it Grand!

Some where born to make it
everything they touch turns gold
others try to fake it but
their luck is always cold
We're all different drummers
playing in the same big band
And if we're gonna play it
play is Grand!
