Rush Limbaugh condemns, criticizes and otherwise lambastes many things, as his radio listeners know. But Michelle Obama seems to have become a target for particularly personal attacks from the conservative radio talk-show host. First, he called out the first lady on her weight; now he says she's guilty of "uppity-ism."

Cracking on Obama's waistline (and nicknaming her Moochelle) was offensive and personal enough. But "uppity-ism"? That phrase -- uttered on his Monday's edition of his show -- won't sit well with some Americans, particularly African Americans.

Historically, "uppity" was considered a code word for blacks whom white people perceived as trying to rise above their station in life.

It's hard to recognize when you're being mocked, but there it is.

He used 'uppity' a couple of years ago and was accused of racism when he said he intended "elite" in the sense of "feeling superior."

In other places, calling Obama (either or both) "elite" is considered dog-whistle for "uppity." So's "arrogant."

If you want to accuse Michelle of "elitism"--which is what the entire segment (so far--I'm forcing myself to listen to Limbaugh; hadn't heard his voice in many a year, thankfully) is about--you'll be accused of calling her "uppity." So why not mock those who think no black can ever actually be elitist or arrogant (except, of course, Thomas and Cain and those like them) and just use the word "uppity" in a nonce word: "uppity-ism"?

It's the same with "Mooch-elle", which Huffington decides to prime us to read as "Moo-chelle." But the pronunciation of "Moochelle" clearly has an affricate for that "ch" to make it "mooch", while "Michelle" (and consequently "Moo-chelle") have a fricative.

It's the same with satire: The target of satire seldom realizes that what's said is satire, usually it's just considered offensive or drivel. I've heard people satirize so miss the point that they speak glowingly of the satire, as though it were other-directed. That's when you can have absolutely no doubt that you're clueless.
