BPA levels soar after eating canned soup: Study (heart disease, diabetes, and obesity)

(CBS) Talk about stirring up controversy. A new study shows that the urine of people who consume canned soup can contain surprisingly high levels of bisphenol A (BPA), a hormone-disrupting compound linked to health problems including heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

People who consumed one serving of canned soup a day for five days had a more than 1,000 percent increase in urinary BPA over people who consumed fresh soup for five days, the study showed.

"We've known for a while that drinking beverages that have been stored in certain hard plastics can increase the amount of BPA in your body," study author Jenny Carwile, a doctoral student at Harvard School of Public Health, said in a written statement. "This study suggests that canned foods may be an even greater concern, especially given their wide use."

BPA is used in the linings of metal food and beverage cans as well as in certain plastic bottles and dental sealants.

1. There are lots of good reasons to make your own soup. This is one more.

Less sodium, more of whatever ingredient you like, taste.....

If you make too much, you can freeze it (most of the time, some are less forgiving of freezing than others).

Still, I've been known to lazy out and open a can of Campbell's.

I buy lots of items that normally come in cans this way to avoid BPA's.

I buy tomatoes this way and soups. They can be found in a regular grocery store usually near the canned items.

It's all calories in, calories out! The worldwide rise in obesity couldn't possibly have anything to do with thefact so many of us are carrying a load of petrochemicals that mimic hormones!

25. A website I went to said they have still not committed to BPA free linings yet. IDK why it is that..

Manufacturers are insisting on the lining. I grew up eating diced tomatoes in cans for many years before they came up with these. They never discolored or interacted with the food. I imagine it is the quality of the metal they made the cans that is the problem with leaching. They seem to be different than in the past.

I like to buy Muir's tomatoes by the case. The only solution I have heard for those who are using canned vegetables is to drain and then rinse all the packing water out, which seems a shame, as I think that is where some of the flavor is.

Food security is getting to be a concern and there are so many chemicals that interact with out bodies that I have been forced to reduce the variety of my diet a great deal because I don't trust the processors at all.

21. I use canning jars

which I usually have around anyway. I've even found that certain peanut butter lids (trader joes brand) will fit a standard mouth canning jar, removing the need to use the metal lids and rings. Nothing wrong with the metal, but they do tend to rust over time in the fridge.

We use glass lock brand storage containers for leftovers, and dh and I use the smallest ones for our work lunches. We just don't reheat with the plastic lids, instead using paper towels.

It was one of my earliest memories of my great aunt--her rectangular refrigerator storage containers with flat glass lids. Only place I had ever seen them, until I saw them on Crate and Barrel's website not so long ago.

...but, my cat does. Every day,

Plus, he's on a prescription diet, due to food allergies...insanely expensive food at that, compared to what he formerly ate, but it's the only thing on the market, as prescribed by our veterinarian, which seems to work.

Now, I hope the anti-allergen benefits outweigh the can-packaged-negatives...?

And, please, do not accuse me of caring more about "animals" than "people," cuz that is not my point.

If these chemicals are bad for people, which I have very little doubt, than it follows that our animal friends' well-being may be at risk, as well.
