Explosion at Ill. plastics plant felt for miles; unknown if injuries

ILLIOPOLIS, Ill. (AP) — An explosion rocked a plastics plant in central Illinois, shutting down an interstate highway and forcing the evacuation of a subdivision. It was not known if anyone was hurt.
Witnesses said the blast was strong enough to be felt five miles away.

The explosion happened before 11 p.m. Friday at the Formosa Plastics plant, said Illinois Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson.

An Illinois State Police dispatcher said Interstate 72 was blocked in both directions late Friday night near Illiopolis, which is between Springfield and Decatur in central Illinois...

2. It was felt more than five miles away

I live about 20 miles from this plant and both felt and heard the blast. In fact, my wife thought someone was knocking on our door.

At last report, three are dead, several are injured, one still missing.

The tragedy is some people who live around this plant have been warning that this was a risk for some time. They were dreading the arrival of this day.

The good news, so far, is that there has apparently not been a toxic chemical release, just a really intense explosion and conventional fire -- but no deadly chemical plume. Does that mean we got lucky?

3. I don't believe it

PVC is pretty darn toxic when it burns. How is it a "conventional fire" when theres little there to burn besides chemicals?
And a shockwave spreads 5+ miles without chemicals spreading.

I have not been able to find anything newer on this besides some local reports on the people who evacuated.

4. These plants are always dangerous in a GOP admin especially

My husband was killed at one in Illinois back in 1989, and 12 of his friends are burned and maimed for life..when Raygun was in charge
workers and soldiers mean NOTHING to corporations, believe me. They mean nothing to them.
