Russia "deeply concerned" over Sharon's threat against Arafat's life
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2004-04/24/content_1438517.htm

MOSCOW, April 24 (Xinhuanet) - Russia said Saturday it is "deeply concerned" over Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's latest threat against the life of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

"Moscow has with deep concern learned of the April 23 declaration by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that he is no longer bound by his earlier promises not to physically harm Yasser Arafat," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said in a statement.

"We would like to reiterate Russia's resolute position on the unacceptability of such threats addressed to the legitimately elected leader of the Palestinian national authority, whom the international community has recognized in this capacity," he said.

"We are insistently calling on the Israeli leadership to abide by the norms of international law... and without delay restart a political dialogue with the Palestinian leadership on the basis of the roadmap peace plan developed by the quartet of Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations," the statement said.

2. We can make an educated guess as to who will approve of Arafat's murder
Meet the Press (NBC News) - Sunday, April 18, 2004

MR. RUSSERT: Israel assassinated Hamas leader Rantisi. Do you support that assassination?

SEN. KERRY: I believe Israel has every right in the world to respond to any act of terror against it. Hamas is a terrorist, brutal organization. It has had years to make up its mind to take part in a peaceful process. They refuse to. Arafat refuses to. And I support Israel's efforts to try to separate itself and to try to be secure. The moment Hamas says, "We've given up violence, we're prepared to negotiate," I am absolutely confident they will find an Israel that is thirsty to have that negotiation.

3. First of all, how can the USA defend it's position on Arafat?
.
.
.

LIke this will scare Sharon: " But under strong pressure from the United States, Israel has yet refrained from killing or expelling Arafat.

Following Sharon's statement, US national security adviser Condoleezza Rice urgently telephoned Sharon to inform him that Washington opposes any move against the Palestinian leader, a US government official said."

Myself, I do NOT think that Sharon should be allowed to execute whomever he feels is a danger outside his country.

BUT

What did the USA just do? - -

they removed Saddam, killed his sons and many of his military, blew his country to shit, well they still ARE blowing Saddams country to shit and killing his citizens,

and he was if anything, a very TINY threat, thousands of miles away.

Arafat is right next door.

I wonder how far Russia will go on this?

Israel is appearing more and more to be THE problem in the Middle East,

well,

besides those Murikkan invaders I mean.

What a frikken mess

(sigh)

8. Here's an interesting analysis on Sharon's timing -
http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/spages/419577.html

snip>
It is convenient for Sharon, who must present a hard line ahead of the Likud referendum on the disengagement and prove to his party members that he is not a sucker who caves in to terror and retreats from Gaza under fire.

It is convenient for Arafat, who loves the role of victim and martyr and uses it to enlist renewed support from the Palestinian public.

And it is also convenient for the American administration, which wants to show its Arab and European friends that it can restrain the "neighborhood bully" and does not automatically support Sharon's every bullying whim.

snip>
The United States has never asked Israel to promise to spare them, and only asked Israel "to consider the implications of its actions." Arafat was kept out of bounds, protected by the Americans, who claimed that killing him would inflame the region and grossly interfere with U.S. interests in the Middle East.

5. if theres real concern, why do we get juniors expressing it?
state dept and foreign ministry spokesmen instead of presidents, secretarys of state etc?

Of course why criticize the palestinians for not supressing violence when we allow their elected leader to be locked up?

6. Perhaps the Russians
will inject some sanity into the equation. Us little people can squawk all we want, but until the big players say "no more", the Bush/Sharon killing spree will continue.

That asshole criminal Bush to do whatever he wants..because Bush is playing to his right wing fanatical christian evangelical base, which is all he has left, the nutbars who want to start up Armageddon.
