Boat Attacks Iraq's Main Oil Terminal -UK Military
Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 01:27 PM by Robbien
BASRA (Reuters) - At least one boat attacked Iraq's main oil terminal offshore in the Gulf on Saturday, a British military spokesman said.

Asked about an unconfirmed report that two boats exploded at the Basra terminal in suicide attacks, Major Ian Clooey told Reuters: "We are just getting reports that there has been an incident at the Basra offshore terminal. There are no firm details yet but we know of at least one vessel involved."

that is all there is in the article, link:

5. I cannot seem to fix that link, it breaks at the semi-colon
the page now has one additional line

Iraq is almost completely dependent on the Basra terminal to export around 1.9 million barrels per day, providing badly needed state funding.

See if this link works

Yeah. I'm sure the money's going to Iraqis and not Halliburton.

4. Looks like the fremen have struck again.
So much for Baron Haarkonen and his "the spice will flow" statement.

Things are looking bad for the Emperor, surely the guild will not stand for this wasting of spice.

11. I've always felt that the resistance fighters
would have better results if they attacked the oil pipeline, rather than go after the troops. The US does not care nearly as much about the troops as their precious black gold.

Going for the pipeline involves less risk, and sabotage can be done at night with a timing device.

So now it looks like they went for the jugular. Allow me a little after-the-fact gloating. Now watch them scramble in Washington like an anthill with a stick poked into it.

Ka-ching Ka-ching Ka-ching, they just hit the jackpot. I wonder if other insurgents will follow suit.

13. That 1.9 bbd is earmarked for China
China buys all the black gold from Basra ports.

Wonder if the port is still operational.

19. "That 1.9 bbd is earmarked for China." Not that I doubt you, but - source?
I've not heard that, would be interesting info, considering the race between China and the US to stock up on oil reserves before Peak Oil really starts hitting both countries.

16. the oil pipelines in the north have produced NOTHING...
since the start of this fiasco. There was a little bit on the news on Thurs. showing a pipeline blaze yet again from sabatoge.I am sure it happens daily yet we never get news of it. You are right, once the black gold finally stops altogether then the neocons may rethink their plans for the ME... :eyes:

14. Update: Basra Oil Terminal, Boat Undamaged - UK MoD
LONDON (Reuters) - An explosion at the Basra offshore oil terminal on Saturday did no damage either to the platform or a boat moored alongside, Britain's Ministry of Defense said.

"A boat exploded next to it. But there was no damage to the oil terminal or the boat alongside it," a spokeswoman told Reuters in London. "As far as I know there were no British casualties."

Officials have said a second suicide bomb boat was intercepted and exploded later.

Then: Condi Rice, 'no one imagined planes could've been used as weapons' (approximate paraphrase of her statement).

Now?: Don Rumsfeld, 'no one imagined boats could've been used as weapons' (expected paraphrase of his statement).

who/what are we dealing with in this misadministration?

27. Where is this in relation to the pipeline to Turkey - they just got a 2nd
auction out of there since last August. I apologize, but geography has never been my strong suite.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_world_business/view/80747/1/.html

snip>
In a first auction last month no US firm was successful, the winners being Royal Dutch/Shell, France's Total, Eni of Italy, Repsol YPF, Hellenic Petroleum and Tupras, with one million barrels each.

The oil will be piped for loading at Turkey's Mediterranean terminal of Ceyhan.

The pipeline became operational last month after being largely out of use since last August, following the invasion of US-led forces and the ousting of dictator Saddam Hussein.

Saddam loyalists and other insurgents were blamed for a series of attacks on the pipeline which disrupted flow.
