An Army reservist from Greensboro who had been missing in Iraq since his convoy was attacked April 9 has been confirmed dead, the military announced Saturday.

The remains of Sgt. Elmer Krause were found Friday, according to a statement from the Department of Defense.

Very, very sad news. Sgt. Krause was the other soldier from the 724th Transportation Company, captured with Pfc. Matt Maupin, the Cincinnati soldier who remains missing, but was seen last week with his kidnappers on videotape. Also kidnapped with the two was Halliburton contractor Thomas Hamill, seen on a separate videotape.

This does not bode well for Hammill or Pfc. Maupin. Cincinnati is blanketed in yellow ribbons for Matt, and his family is distraught. What horrible news for all of the families. :-(

It's hard sometimes, and I'm not the yellow-ribbon type, but I'm trying not to let my cynicism get in the way of feeling for these families.

1. Okay, I'm going to say it.
This doesn't sound like any American military offensive that I've ever heard of. What the frick frack is going on in Iraq! Too many private corporate interests and not enough military discipline.

24. I'm sure you mean, too MUCH chaos.
Did you notice how the Iraqi's are attacking the contractors in Iraq? Do you think that there's a breakdown in trust because they feel they're being exploited?

7. "This incident remains under investigation."
Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 07:22 PM by VolcanoJen
That's likely where this issue will remain for the duration of the war, actually. :grr:

Yes, aquart, far too many details have been left out, and now we have so many more questions when it comes to the whereabouts of Maupin and Hamill.

:-(

How many more young men must lose their lives before Shrub starts paying attention and tries to recitfy his mistake?

And he will never pay attention and never care.

How close to the bottom to we have to fall before we get rid, not just of BushCo, but its enabling Congress.

How sad will I be if Daschle loses his seat?

I sent the link to the photos from the other post to my little list. The more we spread them.... I remember Viet Nam and Johnson and Nixon and the gathering rage.

18. Jen, it has to hit home
its not hitting home for a lot of people...they are turning the channel, they dont want to see in the mirror themselves, and what they have allowed.
They prefer denial.
I hope it doesnt take that many. I sure hope not.

14. Gathering Rage . . .
I remember all that as well, aquart. And I'm beginning to feel just a little of that same sense now. I spoke with three people today who are Repugs but now are having some second thoughts. Just a little undertow of thought and feelings . . . they're sorry they voted the way they did.

We must never give up.

13. Found Friday or confirmed Friday?
I remember when this first happened they found a shallow grave nearby with several bodies in it. Reports said that one was a US soldier.

According to the Herald Tribune article linked in the thread-starting post.

Who knows, though...? I'm way beyond putting any trust behind the DoD.

Good memory, alcuno. It's going to take thousands of us to keep the DoD on their toes... and we must never, ever forget about the missing, and the prisoners. We HAVE to start logging these mysteries NOW.

17. There was video on Al Jazeera.
Before they found the shallow grave. There was a boy holding a piece of a military uniform. From what I could see of Maupin, it didn't belong to him. Besides they said that one of the bodies in the shallow grave was likely a US soldier since he had military gear. I don't believe that the body was found on Friday. I remember the name of this soldier and thought at the time that it must be him.

Screw the "cannon fodder" that the NG/Reserves/enlisted are considered "nothing more than" under this administration.

21. Deepest regrets from N.C. I was...
hoping against hope that he would be found alive. This doesn't look good for the others either. This war has to end, Bush has to go.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – An Army reservist from Greensboro, missing in Iraq since his convoy was attacked April 9, was confirmed dead Saturday - a day before his 41st birthday.

The remains of Sgt. Elmer Krause were found Friday, according to a statement from the Department of Defense. He was assigned to the Army Reserve's 724th Transportation Company, Bartonville, Ill.

Krause grew up in Vallejo, east of San Francisco, according to his brother. He previously served in the U.S. Navy and moved to Greensboro four or five years ago, where friends said he worked as a painter at Timco Aviation Services.

``He went over there and he didn't express any regrets. He expressed no concern about going over. He said in a conversation with me, 'I'm not afraid to go,''' Krause's older brother, Jim, told reporters at the entrance to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif.

Jim Krause, 51, said his brother said he hoped to provide leadership to younger soldiers.

``His birthday would have been tomorrow. He was more than 40 years old and going over to fight,'' he said. ``We grieve his loss. This is difficult for us, but his determination strengthens us.''

It seems as though they're being led to their death.

How terribly, terribly, sad.
