Democrat Claims Double Standard on Images of Remains

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) said yesterday that President Bush's aides had applied a double standard by using flag-draped remains in a campaign commercial and then suppressing photos of military caskets returning from Iraq.

One of the Bush campaign's first ads included a fleeting shot of firefighters carrying remains through the World Trade Center rubble. Last week, the Pentagon said it had erred in answering a Freedom of Information Act request by releasing photos of coffins with Iraq war dead at Dover Air Force Base, Del.

Emanuel, a political director for President Bill Clinton, said it is a mistake to "use the value of privacy only when it's convenient."

"I'm calling for a little consistency in our values," he said.

I'm curious what fate would befall these flag burners if they burned an effigy of Saddam under his rule? My eight ball says outlook not so good...

7. Who Knows Their Fate Now

Now that they are under the regime of George Bush their fate will probably be the same as some of those injured and killed Iraqi;s pictured here.

They are no safer now than they were before!

9. Let me suggest a thought experiment.

This summer in New York, Dubya will make a stirring speech at ground zero. Let us celebrate our freedoms, so hated by those terrorists by burning Bush in effigy during the speech.

Surely that would dispirit Osama more than any other thing we could do, to burn Bush in effigy in his presence, and walk away scott free, simply because we are Americans, from the land of the free and the home of the brave. He could not do it to the King in his homeland, nor could have been done in Kuwait, I hazard to say.

But here in America, you have the first Amendment as your surety and bond. You can speak your mind, and no one can do ought but wish you well. Because we are in a free country, and as Mr. Rumsfeld says, in a free country you are free to do things.

You go first, here's my lighter. Write if they give you paper.
Really, I think we are in a sad state, if we must measure what freedoms exist in Iraq by whether they are better than a totalitarian state, as opposed to say, California?

Instead, we might be better served by measuring what freedoms we previously had, by what is left. So far, the only original amendment I see still standing tall is No. 2. And in Donald Rumsfeld's version of freedom, I guess that will have to suffice.

That "Fire-Up Photo" always gets a Lee Greenwood type rant in return.

Usually the Freeper makes a comment, that I am a terrorist or some lame comment like that.

They miss the whole point which more than one person here has figured out.
