WASHINGTON -- After several years of slow growth, the global economy is perking up and the outlook is favorable, the Group of Seven finance ministers said Saturday.
The finance ministers for the world's seven leading industrial countries said oil price increases could become a serious problem but, "overall the balance of risks to the outlook has improved."
The group, known as the G7, said in a communique summing up two days of discussions that the global recovery had strengthened since the last meeting in Boca Raton, Fla., in early February. The group is made up of finance ministers and central bankers from the United States, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Canada.
Treasury Secretary John Snow said at a news conference that "the tone of the meeting was positive" because the ministers could see "discernible improvement" in economic prospects.
