Bush, Cheney's joint appearance unprecedented

By Dana Milbank
The Washington Post

WASHINGTON - Chairman Thomas Kean's requirement that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney appear together before his commission on the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, quipped: ``Well, we recognize that Mr. Bush may help Mr. Cheney with some of the answers.''

Kean's remark sparked laughter among the assembled reporters because it turned upside down the assumption of the question, and of much of official Washington: that the White House requested the joint appearance, scheduled for April 29, so Cheney could coach Bush on his answers.

While Bush has declined to explain the rationale for the joint meeting, Democrats charge that Cheney is a ``ventriloquist,'' and even a number of independent observers say it appears that the two men are trying to keep their stories straight.

Bush, asked twice at his recent news conference why he and Cheney required a joint appearance, declined to discuss the decision, saying, ``It's a good chance for both of us to answer questions that the 9/11 commission is looking forward to asking us, and I'm looking forward to answering them.''

4. I think we need to express our outrage with our own event:
National Bring-a-Chimp-to-Work Day!

If you're pissed about this, then bring a sock puppet or do a Goggle image search for chimpanzees and print out a big one and bring it to work -- if you still have a job -- and put it somewhere where your co-workers will see it and inquire: just tell them "Props to Dick Cheney... this is National bring-a-chimp-to-work Day!" If they ask for further explanation then they really aren't paying attention are truly A@TW: so tell them about Gepetto Cheney and the puppet who wants to be a 'real boy'...

I'm going to do it and you should too! With pictures and everything!

24. I sincerely do not believe ridicule will work.
I would suggest the dissemination of pamphlets with "BETRAYAL" on the front which outline merely the basics of the PNAC and corrupt practices by this administration.

Don't get me wrong, advertising the horrific (and real and truthful) skeletons of this administration is fine. Pictorial ridicules are simply,...a turn-off. Broadly disseminated info pamphlets with a clear intention to inform,...I imagine,...would work best.

But,...that is just my two cents.

5. My e-mail to Maureen Dowd
Articles criticizing the Bush White House in the mainstream media are as refreshing as they are rare. But though I am grateful for your 4/25 "Bushworld" editorial, I feel obligated to make a minor criticism.

You compare Bush and Cheney appearing together at the 9/11 commission hearings to an appearance by the Olsen twins. But the while the twins have proven themselves capable of thinking and speaking independently of each other, Bush has proven himself incapable of spontaneously answering spontaneous questions. I therefore think your paragraph should have read, "In Bushworld, it's perfectly natural for the president and vice president to appear before the 9/11 commission like Shari Lewis and Lambchop."

6. Good one. By the way, did you catch Karen Hughes on BookTV today?
At the LA book festival.
She spewed all her usual venom and doublespeak while wearing dark glasses... But then questions from the audience came: two people asked why the two of them had to be together. She gave a non answer (how Bush was more willing than any previous president to talk to a congressional commision--which is a lie, this is not a congressional commission, Bush established it himself-- and blah, blah, blah. The next person said like "that is not an answer. Why can't Bush go by himself? It makes it look like he cannot speak for his own actions and policies without Cheney's help." She responded something like "I worked with the President for more than ten years and I assure you he can talk very well blah, blah, blah." Then the next question is: why do we want to establish a democracy in Iraq when we do not have an elected president in our own country? Her answer: Bush got more votes... then corrected herself and said "electoral votes..." blah blah blah. The audience in general was not very friendly.

29. While I understand the sentiment behind your last statement
I respectfully disagree.

If these people simply "could not tell the truth," they would be suffering from some form of compulsive disorder or mental illness. While this would still be extremely dangerous for the country as a whole, they would merit some degree of sympathy (and should seek treatment or - considering that that would constitute a mental disorder causing them to be a threat to themselves or others - committed to an institution for their own good.)

However, they CAN tell the truth. They know the difference, and they CHOOSE to lie. That very chaoice makes them criminally negligent.

They merit absolutely NO sympathy whatsoever. NONE!

17. This is SO Bogus.
This dynamic duo will appear next week as a twosome. They'll sit right next to each other as they face the 9/11 Commission.

Note: they will NOT be under oath.

They will speak to the Commission behind closed doors. I.e. no reporters are allowed in, just in case LuciBush makes a faux pas.

So these two will be given lots of time to answer, lots of coaching and remedial help, and lots of time to look concerned and worried about the deaths.

A big fat nothing will come out of this.

43. Bob Woodward hinted that they may actually appear separately.
On his "Meet the Press" appearance yesterday, he said it was just a "guess," but he feels that Bush and Cheney will actually appear before the commission separately.

Makes me wonder if the whole thing is just a set-up. I can't understand what the political advantage would be, but if we receive news that Chimpy and Cheney went it alone, just remember that they tipped Woodward off first...
