WASHINGTON - It is Syrian Ambassador Imad Moustapha's first foray into the world of politics, and he is finding Washington hard to fathom.
"They discuss imposing sanctions on us, and then they write us a letter telling us how we can help on stabilizing and pacifying Iraq (news - web sites)," said Moustapha, referring to a letter Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) sent recently to Syria's president.
Then, there is Washington's belief that Syria is not doing enough to help stop Muslim militants from sneaking into Iraq to fight coalition troops there.
"We tell them if you really think there's an infiltration problem, let us see what we can do on this," said Moustapha. "Usually the State Department is more positive and constructive .... The Pentagon (news - web sites) is not very responsive."
