NATO Sees No Iraq Role Unless Many Conditions Met
OSLO (Reuters) - NATO (news - web sites) will only consider a wider role in Iraq (news - web sites) if a string of conditions are met including a U.S. handover to a "credible" government in Baghdad, Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said Monday.

During a visit to Norway, he said NATO was focused on getting more troops to Afghanistan (news - web sites) rather than on helping stabilize Iraq after a planned transfer of power by Washington to a new Iraqi government on June 30.

"Afghanistan...is clearly the first priority," de Hoop Scheffer told a news conference after talks with Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik. "The alliance should do more to get the necessary forces on the ground in Afghanistan."

1. No kidding. They don't want part of a broken mess without say on how to
fix it.

2. They don't want to prop up a propped up theatre prop...
...we're creating an allusion just as if we were presenting a play on a theatre stage. Europe sees it for what it is.

3. The opium production in Afghanistan is really hurting the British Isles
A Scottish friend told me that heroin use in Scotland has skyrocketed. It's becoming a huge social problem.

4. Exactly, lebkuchen: Part of the bush family fortune is in drugs...
The Iran-Contra thing didn't just come about as a clever "new" idea...they already had a big hand in the Mena, Arkansas thing. Plus, if you look back at their family $$, a great deal of it is tied to the drug trade.

Why do you think they didn't do anything to stop the planting of new crops in Afghanistan after blowing the place to pieces. The Taliban didn't allow drugs. But the Americans sure do!! Our government is in the drug business! Both legal and illegal!

5. Taliban, U.N., opium and warlords
The Taliban did allow opium crop and the production of heroin, unless they ceased to heavy international (U.N.) pressure, mixed with aid. They could succeed, because they really were controlling much of Afghanistan.

I do think much of the success of the U.S. in ousting the Taliban came (besides bribes) from the fact that local warlords were royally pissed that the Taliban dared to take away much of their income through the drug trade.

Of course, now that the heavy handed Taliban have gone, why shouldn't they plant what brings most money (and can't be taxed by the government)?
