Idaho Gov.: White House Wants Him for EPA (as Sen. 1/73 votes for environ)
Emmis Interactive/Chicago

Gov. Dirk Kempthorne said Monday he has been contacted by the White House about becoming chief of the Environmental Protection Agency. ---

A U.S. senator from 1993 to 1998, Kempthorne registered only one "pro-environment" vote among 73 votes tracked by the League of Conservation Voters. He is now seven months into his second term as governor and will become chairman of the National Governors Association later this month.

Kempthorne's supporters acknowledge that his selection would be a lightning rod for those who want to use the nomination to attack Bush's environmental record. But Kempthorne also is viewed by the administration as a candidate capable of deflecting some of the sharpest attacks because of his six years in the Senate.

After Bush won the presidency in 2000, Kempthorne unsuccessfully campaigned for a job in the administration. Marianne L. Horinko currently is serving as the EPA's acting administrator.
