Clinton's Memoirs to Be Released in June (AP)
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 01:51 PM by VolcanoJen
Well, at least we won't have to wait until the fall. Now, you just know this is gonna be a good book. :D

Bring It On!

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&u=/ap/20040426/ap_on_re_us/publishing_bill_clinton_1&printer=1

The suspense is over, almost. Former President Clinton (news - web sites)'s memoirs will be published in late June, and promotion will begin a few weeks earlier with a speech at BookExpo America, the industry's annual convention.

"It is the fullest and most nuanced account of a presidency ever written, and one of the most revealing and remarkable memoirs I have ever had the honor of publishing," Sonny Mehta, president and editor-in-chief of Alfred A. Knopf, said in a statement Monday.

"He talks with candor about his successes, as well as his setbacks, looking at both his career in public service and his life."

<snip>

If Bill Clinton (news - web sites) turns out a first-rate memoir, especially about his presidential years, he will be a true path breaker. The only highly regarded presidential memoir is by Ulysses Grant, who devoted the vast majority of the book to his triumphant Civil War military leadership and wrote virtually nothing about his often disastrous presidency.

Most presidential works have the dull, self-serving tone of a prepared speech. They suffer from the impersonal hand of a ghost writer or from the impersonal tastes of the president. The memoirs of Herbert Hoover, for example, include balance sheets on food assistance to Armenia and Lithuania and estimated totals of dried fruit exports.

7. Yes, and it's going to be SO enjoyable watching them freak out.
Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pages by Bill Clinton... the media completely saturated with Bill Clinton... huge displays of Bill Clinton's face staring them down on bookcovers at the Barnes & Nobles... Weeks and weeks of Bill Clinton excerpts in the New York Times... Bill Clinton on 60 Minutes, Bill Clinton on Larry King, Bill Clinton on The freakin' View, even.

You know, their heads might actually pop off. Their faces will go red as beets, smoke will curl from their ears, and their heads will likely pop right off. I am completely serious.

God, it's gonna be great...}(

31. He's still my President!
The lone Republican at our book club made a point of telling all of us that she didn't want to read any more "political books" for the club selections.

I now have a book club suggestion for July!

20. Conspiracy Theory
Does anyone think it is possible that Clinton is putting the book out in order to take the limelight off of Kerry, so that he can help assure Kerry doesn't win, thus opening the door for Hillary in 2008?

4. I've got a feeling that Clinton's memoirs
will not include balance sheets on food assistance to Armenia and Lithuania and estimated totals of dried fruit exports.

I hope it contains information regarding Enron and the energy crooks from Texas. I also hope it contains information about why Clinton approved of NAFTA and GATT, the one thing I've been critical of Clinton about.

But the national security gold mine that BC sits on must be enormous. More revelations will come to light, don't you think?

16. yeah, Kerry talks about Clinton A LOT
and he regularly talks with clinton himself privately also. kerry already said he wants clinton campaigning for him. the speech that clinton gave at the democratic unity dinner for kerry was incredible. especially the "send me" part. where he said during vietnam war bush, cheney, and himself(clinton) could have gone but didn't, but john kerry said "send me".

and hillary is supporting kerry also. her speech at the new york campaign event with kerry and rangel was soooo good. for those who keep saying hillary wants kerry to lose so she can run, they need to listen to her speak in support of kerry. they are so wrong.

18. Remember Hillary's book signings?
At every stop, 1,000 or so fans would line up around the block and wait hours just to have her sign their copy. That's a huge turnout, and she drew those kinds of crowds everywhere she went.

If Bill Clinton has a book signing, though, they're going to have to hold it in Madison Square Garden.

This book is going to be absolutely freaking huge.

BTW, I saw Hillary's book came out in softcover this past week..I don't remember the price on it because I have her signed copy. But, I did get to chat w/ a woman in her 60's who said how much she loves Hillary and wants her to run for president when she was buying her book.

26. Re: U.S. Grant's memoirs
He focused on his Civil War experiences exclusively only because the book was intended as a vehicle to provide financial security for his wife and family, as he was dying of throat cancer and in a race with death to complete the memoirs. He was still an immensely popular president and came close to being nominated for a non-consecutive third term.

Clinton memoirs 'to be revealing'

Former US President Bill Clinton's long-awaited memoirs will go on sale in June, his publishers have announced.

Mr Clinton's account of eight years in the White House is candid and revealing, Sonny Mehta, president and editor-in-chief of Alfred A Knopf said.

"It is a riveting personal drama as well," he added.

The book, which reputedly earned Mr Clinton a fee of more than $10m, is expected to sell well and has an initial print run of 1.5 million.

The first official/authorised biography of the Duchess of Windsor (Wallis Simpson) written by her daughter - who is married to Predsident Harry S Truman's brother's grandson Professor Sir Ian Truman - is also published in June, in the UK.

Freepers might be interested to know that it names George Walker Bush as the felon who raped and tortured her daughter when she was a child, and lists all the US Justice Department documents which show that Richard McGarrich Helms - ex-CIA officer and Nazi afficionado - was ordered to cover this up by Bush Sr when he was CIA chief.....

J K Rowling wrote a fantasy--published as a fantasy--and was successful.

Of course, when one is being pursued by the paedophile Nazi money-laundering gun-runners of the IRA, one doesn't have time to keep one's fantasies straight.

58. It's a class thing. Some brits can't believe that a
single mother who was on welfare could have tapped into something so culturally intersting, and then made more money than the queen in the process.

I heard AS Byatt say the most nasty things about JKR. Remember, Byatt is the author who thinks that the greatest thing in the world for one of her characters to discover is that she is related to not one but TWO famous poets. AS Byatt's recent biography about her family's fall and then rise (with her own success) is one of the most class-conscious works I've seen come from a person who sells themselves as smart that I've ever seen.

This is where the hatred comes from for Rowling.

It's no surprise that Rowling's books are also not-so-sublte criticisms of class and privilege (notice how all the good characters have muddy blood lines and the bad people are all pure-born). This turns the usualy myth on its head. It used to be in British children's literature that all the good poor people were born with pure blood, but they just didn't find out about it until later in life.
