Brahimi a controversial figure, says Chalabi

WASHINGTON: Iraqi Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi said on Sunday that the top UN envoy to Iraq, Lakhdar Brahimi, is too controversial to bring together the country's competing political groups. "He is a controversial figure. He's not a unifying figure," Chalabi told "Fox News Sunday."

<SNIP>

He {Brahimi} added: "Frankly, I think it's silly, you know, to suggest that I may have a problem because I am Sunni, that I favor the Sunnis against - on the Shias. Why should I do that?"

Asked whether he has heard that type of criticism in Iraq, he said: "No, I have heard that some people have said that. But, you know, I think some of those people have agendas that have nothing to do with the fact that I'm a Sunni."

The Washington Post reported on Saturday that the United States and Brahimi have decided to sideline most of the Iraqi politicians Washington has relied on during the last year.

As Raed mentions, the neocons must really dislike the thought of the U.N. bailing them out.

1. thank god we have the sterling opinion of a great and respected statesman
like Chalabi (only wanted for felonies in three or four countries) to highlight the heinous corruption of the UN.

5. Coming from Chalabi, Brahimi must be a saint
Chalabi, the man who was cut off from the CIA because of lies, cut off from the Pentagon because he couldn't account for millions of US taxpayer money and convicted of embezzlement and bank fraud.

A real trustworthy source he is.

Chalabi's on his way out and he's going down fighting.

Officials: US Still Paying Millions to Group that Provided False Iraqi Intelligence

WASHINGTON - The Department of Defense is continuing to pay millions of dollars for information from the former Iraqi opposition group that produced some of the exaggerated and fabricated intelligence President Bush used to argue his case for war.

The Pentagon has set aside between $3 million and $4 million this year for the Information Collection Program of the Iraqi National Congress, or INC, led by Ahmed Chalabi, said two senior U.S. officials and a U.S. defense official.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because intelligence programs are classified.

The continuing support for the INC comes amid seven separate investigations into pre-war intelligence that Iraq was hiding illicit weapons and had links to al-Qaida and other terrorist groups. A probe by the Senate Intelligence Committee is now examining the INC's role.

8. I know he is still on the payroll
I was pointing out how he is considered a liar, a thief, and embezzler and a fraud.

Some may not have heard about this travesty of justice.

11. Travesty is the perfect word for it
How he can still be sucking on the taxpayers tit goes to show just how apathetic Americans really are.

There has been ZERO public outcry about this.

"I want my, I want my, I want my MTV"

I get sick everytime I think about it.

7. I was gonna say. . .
That a censure by Chalabi probably recommends the man to me more than his CV and experience does.

Kinda like when the religious right protests a film, I know it will be something I'll enjoy or need to see.

10. And that's why I haven't gone to see "The Passion of the Christ"
"Kinda like when the religious right protests a film, I know it will be something I'll enjoy or need to see."

Since the religious nuts liked the movie, I knew I would hate it.

20. And from what I've heard, it's nothing more than a splatter film...
Wrapped up in religious overtones.

I'd like to see the fundies complain about the next Freddie or Jason movie after supporting this gore-fest.

13. Chalabi should go for a walk outside the Green Zone
He would soon find out what a unifying figure he is himself. I doubt he would remain unified for long though.

18. I Heard This Man on NPR
He spoke eloquently, honestly, thoughtfully, and his name was Brahimi.
Then I find out he's working for Bush. What's wrong with this picture?

1. How long will he last?

2. Any chance the adults will prevail after the children are sent to stand in the corner?
