PM (Canadian), Bush deflect missile discussion

Apr. 27, 2004. 01:00 AM

WASHINGTON—Prime Minister Paul Martin appears to have already scored a victory in his meeting Friday with U.S. President George W. Bush — by keeping discussion of continental missile defence off the official agenda.

/snip/

Ottawa has a number of options available, from rejecting the Bush plan to allowing interceptor missiles on its soil.

Critics have assailed Bush for committing $53 billion (U.S.) to a program which has not passed rudimentary testing.

The 1,600-member Canadian Association of Physicists warned Martin this month the proposed system was unlikely to work and could bring crippled missiles crashing onto Canada.

"the proposed system was unlikely to work and could bring crippled missiles crashing onto Canada."

luvly,

just feckin' luvly!

1. I suspect Martin will try and hash out a quick mad-cow fix with Bush.
If he can come back with that into an election call, that will resonate very well in the farming areas of Ontario who are likely to go Tory, as well as in a few seats in Alberta.

2. I don't see much being done at this meeting...
both men are in election mode and don't want to upset anyone so they will make nice, agree to meet again and that will be it. Martin knows missile defense is a no go with most Canadians so I am not surprised that is off the agenda. I bet their joint "press conference" or it's equivalent will talk about border security.

4. LOL Given that bush is inept in everything he does...
if Martin is offered a ride he should refuse. I suspect bush in his truck is filmed in front of a blue screen, it is a pretense just like the rest of his "down home boy" act.
