DOWNING Street has reacted cautiously to an unprecedented letter from dozens of senior former British diplomats condemning Tony Blair’s handling of Middle East policy.
In an open letter to the Prime Minister the 52 former ambassadors, high commissioners and governors told him to stop backing America’s "doomed" policy on Iraq and Israel. .................
...............The diplomats - who include former ambassador to Israel, Iraq and the UN - told Mr Blair they had "watched with deepening concern the policies you have followed on the Arab Israel problem and Iraq, in close co-operation with the United States.
"We feel the time has come to make our anxieties public, in the hope that they will be addressed in parliament and will lead to a fundamental reassessment."
And they told Mr Blair he must bring his influence to bear on US President George Bush to change direction as "a matter of the highest urgency".
