Guernica: Testimony of War

http://www.pbs.org/treasuresoftheworld/guernica/gmain.html

It is modern art's most powerful antiwar statement... created by the twentieth century's most well-known and least understood artist. But the mural called Guernica is not at all what Pablo Picasso has in mind when he agrees to paint the centerpiece for the Spanish Pavilion of the 1937 World's Fair.

For three months, Picasso has been searching for inspiration for the mural, but the artist is in a sullen mood, frustrated by a decade of turmoil in his personal life and dissatisfaction with his work. The politics of his native homeland are also troubling him, as a brutal civil war ravages Spain. Republican forces, loyal to the newly elected government, are under attack from a fascist coup led by Generalissimo Francisco Franco. Franco promises prosperity and stability to the people of Spain. Yet he delivers only death and destruction.

On April 27th, 1937, unprecedented atrocities are perpetrated on behalf of Franco against the civilian population of a little Basque village in northern Spain. Chosen for bombing practice by Hitler's burgeoning war machine, the hamlet is pounded with high-explosive and incendiary bombs for over three hours. Townspeople are cut down as they run from the crumbling buildings. Guernica burns for three days. Sixteen hundred civilians are killed or wounded.

By May 1st, news of the massacre at Guernica reaches Paris, where more than a million protesters flood the streets to voice their outrage in the largest May Day demonstration the city has ever seen. Eyewitness reports fill the front pages of Paris papers. Picasso is stunned by the stark black and white photographs. Appalled and enraged, Picasso rushes through the crowded streets to his studio, where he quickly sketches the first images for the mural he will call Guernica. His search for inspiration is over.

On edit: although I can't speak for the left in Spain, the fact that 90% of the country didn't support the CHIMP'S "Shock and Awe" campaign is illustrated by the reception of this work, against the unbridled use of force against defenseless children, the elderly and all civilians.

124. Why not?
Other than the fact that this kind of a thing has happened in Iraq more than a several times in the last year, and will happen yet again, why is the comparison "a bit dramatic"? If you look at the number of dead civilians compared to the whole population, this is worse than 9/11.

19. not call to prayer
it was chanting, a meditative chant:

"allahu akbar, allahu akbar, la-illaha-il-allah"
"god is great, god is great, there is no god but god"

A bit different contextually than a call to prayer, which would be rather pointless in the middle of a bombardment. Its more likely relied on to soothe people, ease their fears, etc.

I wouldnt be surprised if no-one in the CNN newsroom is familiar with Arabic or the call to prayer.

I going to make the assumption that someone stopped talking…..
Earlier today, Kimmitt spoke….

DJ US Gen Says Talks In Fallujah Seem To Be Going Well

BAGHDAD (AP)--A U.S. commander says talks to end the standoff in the Iraqi
city of Fallujah seem to be going well.
U.S. forces had earlier extended a cease-fire in the city despite sporadic
fighting with insurgents.
Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt told Associated Press Radio that the U.S. doesn't plan
on setting deadlines or ultimatums, saying they wouldn't be helpful at this
point.
But Kimmitt said U.S. military officials will follow the recommendations of
the Marine commander in the Fallujah area. He says if the commander decides it's
time to "stop talking," then U.S. officials will "stand behind him."

23. Saddam couldn't control Fallujah
If you are trying to take control of the city, overwhelming force is going to be required.

Of course, that leaves the question of whether we should be there in the first place.

And that's where my dilemma comes into play. I believe that once we commit to war, all bets are off. You use overwhelming force and pound an enemy into submission. So - since we are already in over our heads in Iraq - this kind of attack is inevitable. But, we should never have had to face this choice.

CNN/MSNBC using the same feed. Looks like massive bombing although
they say it's strikes on arms depots. First they both reported that the truce was still on, then the story changed to "US surprise attack."

Then the story changed to "The Fallujan's wouldn't give up their weapons" so the truce was over.

Then they changed the story again to how there really wasn't a truce in the first place because the fighting was ongoing.

Then it changed to a reprisal for yesterdays battle where marines were severely wounded and one killed.

Take your pick. The propaganda is being changed as they report with bombings in the erie green screen.

Where are the women and children? Where are they?

You just load the planes and fly the hell off. We have no business in Iraq - we should leave, NOW! Not tomorrow - NOW! There is no excuse for staying even one more day, period. Every excuse is simply some variation on "We know best." "The Iraqis aren't like real people." "Arabs can't govern themselves." "We want to rule the world." No reason for our staying one more day is valid - none. Iraq does not belong to US! Iraq belongs to the Iraqis! US out of Iraq NOW!

it's none of your business. The idea that we have to keep Iraq as a colony because they would just kill each other off if we didn't is an old colonialist saw. We are the great white hope for all of these benighted darkies - yeah, right. When the US was having its little civil war and we were killing off thousands of each other, do you think Lincoln would have welcomed some other country stepping in to keep the stupid Americans from killing each other. Hell no he wouldn't have. Peoples have to go through a certain series of events (no two quite alike) in order to come out on the other side as a nation, or group of nations. This isn't our place and we should butt the hell out.

For the amount of money we pay each contractor ($1000-1200/day), we could hire one hundred Iraqis at a damned good salary. Take out five hundred contracting jobs, give 50,000 Iraqis a means of supporting themselves.

STOP being such freakin' control-freaks is another thing that could be done. Bring in so-called opposition and include them in the process.

Set up a form of elections NOW is another show of good faith.

There are an infinite variety of ways to STOP doing the same damn thing which is clearly NOT WORKING. Use of force will NOT suppress or oppress,...it will merely inflame not only the situation in Iraq but also across the whole Middle East!!!

131. You may be totally right, BHN.
I feel strongly that there are plenty of US soldiers who would follow orders and shoot down Americans just like they are shooting down Iraqis. And now that this government has gotten a good taste of the Merc-brew, what's to stop them from hiring 50 or 100 thousand mercs to patrol our streets - no false loyalty, there. I have never, even in the darkest, deepest blood-feuds of the the late 60's and early 70's, felt as afraid of the US government as I feel today. If we have lost the country, we have no back-up. Some of you out there will know what that means.

the beautiful thing about America, imo, is that here is one of the few places the seed has broken the soil and started to show what it could grow into if nurtured and given a little tlc.

and if one reads an unbiased view of history, maybe it has not worked here either. examples: the native american, the african american, women

at CBS MarketWatch:

"OPEC has acknowledged that they are ready to ratchet up prices jumping possibly 30 percent," said Kevin Kerr, editor of Kwest Market Edge, a financial newsletter.

Kerr believes "OPEC is saying in effect 'hey thanks a lot for coming here , and if we need help we will call you again -- oh and by the way --- here is you bill for the oil you protect, we just increased it 30 percent, thanks for shopping.'"

So otherwords, those brown skinned people should be grateful that the courageous USA is protecting their oil wells. (As if our SUV's don't need it)

32. on a related note - NYC Peace Benefit
NYC BENEFIT FOR PEACE ACTIVISTS FACING JAIL

WHAT: BENEFIT CONCERT

WHO: Queer feminist activist band from NYC "The Syndicate", Bands Against Bush power pop band "Gladshot", popular rockers "Marwood", Brooklyn’s own “Motico”, all-girl punk outfit "Pie", comedienne and activist Drae Campbell as MC and Special Guests TBA.

WHERE: Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard Street, NYC Directions at www.knittingfactory.com

WHEN: Sunday, May 2nd, 2pm

HOW MUCH: $15

WHY? This is a benefit show for the 16 non-violent activists who were arrested during a protest on March 26, 2003. They were protesting Rachel Corrie’s death, violations of Palestinian human rights, and the war on Iraq. They were recently convicted, and in what is seen as an effort to punish activists in the lead up to the GOP convention in August, now face jail time at their May 12th sentencing. This is an important case for the activist community, and the defendants need our support.

With surgery, you have to really consider your options before undertaking a major operation. But who could object to a little psychotherapy? Hell, half the country's on some kind of psychotropic prescription medication anyway. We LOVE psychology!

So this invasion will soon be reclassified as a "group session".

Uncanny how lucky they are - it is just two U.S. bombs, the rest are the other guys' fault. The World Trade Center was just two strikes about 100 yards apart, the rest was just the buildings falling down.

P.S. I am not implying Iraq had anything to do with WTC - just showing how absurd this parsing of causality really is.

84. Definitely some fuel
Other than a couple secondaries that looked like they could be explosives, the fires were large and consistent. They probably hit a cache that included fuel. Also, it's not quite two strikes, according to the reporter on the scene, it's two or three different locations hit by 20 to 25 Howitzer 105mm high-explosive cannon shells each.

To everyone else, stay calm. Over reaction and hyperbole gains nothing. The city isn't destroyed yet, no matter the casualties. Be cool and wait for the story to develop. We'll have the facts soon enough.

but I'm damned glad I'm not the only one that empathizes with the innocent victims this much. I have that exact same reaction, each and every time, no matter if it's the US who are the killers or the IDF is or some Palestinian terrorist.

I wish every American would have this epiphany - to realize how WRONG war is. Love your enemies, and do good to those that hate you, right Christian America? RIGHT?!

157. The lack of empathy is astounding-
That the blood thirsty crusading X-tians can see
others as anything but their brothers and sisters
is perhaps what disturbs me most about 'murikkkans.
The TOTAL lack of anything other that blind hate and
complete disconnect from other living beings.
I HATE Americans right now.
They are STUPID, IGNORANT, GREEDY, UNCONSCIOUS
SLOBS and they DESERVE to live under this satanic
corporate cabal.
I want OUT.
I think people here at DU who still cling to some
romantic dream of "taking back the country" are
completely deluded, and will most likely end
up shot by Mercs, or imprisoned as ENC's.
Everyone of them should sit down and watch
two films immediately:
1. Ship of Fools
2. The Pianist
WAKE UP People, those who disagree with
this fascist X-tian corporate government will
be dealt with as you now see them dealing with
people in other countries- you are not special,
your vote will not count, and dissent will NOT
be tolerated.
Ask the Jews of Warsaw what the writing on the wall is.

BHN,...do you really believe our people have fallen to those depths at this moment? Historical marches have taken place over the last 18+ months in this country.

I do have moments, even hours and days, as you are having, where I fear the worst and know the limits of my individual power to stop it.

However, I KNOW that our people are sufficiently educated and caring and resourceful and strong to stand together against another "empire".

189. The Iraqi People are FAR more educated
than the average American.
It did them no good at all in defense
against the Empire.
As I said to another poster opn this thread,
We have not yet begun to see the wave of
hatred about to be unleashed in this country
against anyone who goes against, or speaks
against the Empire.
It is the very same violence that is being unleashed
on the Iraqi people today and it makes no distinguishment
between people like us and them.
The X-tians are just dying to club the hell out
of homo-sexuals, intellectuals, agnostics,
and anyone else who does not think like them.
I am not waiting around for that day as I see it
clearly at our door...these attacks are going to unleash
hell and will be the perfect excuse for the cabal
to tighten the noose around us another notch.
Make no mistake, ther is a fundie in your neighborhood
who would love to bash your head for GAWD.
I sse them all the time and I am scared because
they are being given more and more power.
I think it no different that the Germans who were willing
to kill their neighbors. to deny that they are out there
and the Cabal FULLY intends to use them is just
plain foolish.
IMHO...

204. I guess there is no way I can offer you any comfort, then.
I am sorry I failed you.

Sure, I have seen and bumped into and spoken to the kinds of extremists you speak of,...but, they don't represent the vast majority of people who do maintain some sense of their humanity. I also find that their "extremism" is usually limited to some narrow belief or another within a broader life that they live. They are still human.

I am not afraid of them or this administration. I am prepared to protect myself and my only son, if I find myself in conditions against which I cannot take a stand or fight. But, those conditions do not yet exist.

I marched with over a million other people just a couple of days ago,...people with passion and strength and greater resolve than a handful of right-wing radicals could ever know or overcome. Hence, I still believe that humanity will pull back that pendulum of radicalism.

Since they are still reporting:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/04/27/iraq.main/index.html

<snip>

The official said the military is committed to letting the political process work in an effort to keep the standoff and sporadic fighting from developing into a full-fledged battle.

<snip>

"As for people walking up and down the streets of Fallujah, we would encourage that," added. "We would encourage the capability not only the people of Fallujah to be walking up and down the streets, but the Iraqi Police Service and the Iraqi Civil Defense Service and the coalition forces will be walking up and down the streets."

<more>

Nice plan I suppose, encourage people to come out by declaring the ceasefire still in effect, and then launch Specter Gunships at them...

asked by an "anchor." Anchor said: "We should assume that this airstrike was planned even thought a ceasefire was supposedly in place."

General replied: "Yes it takes planning to do surgical stricks of this precision so this would have been in the planning stages for some time."

I guess our great Marine force couldn't take the city so we have to level it from the air. And we will call ourselves brave heros. Mai Lai II. There is nothing to be proud about concerning this. We are in their country, killing their people and expecting them to not fight us back and for doing so they are called 'thugs' 'terrorists' 'insurgents' and we are called 'liberators.' We are in some kind of spiritual time warp. I am not proud to be an American today. It isn't enough that Bush is responsible for the deaths of over 700 of children...he has to make up for it by killing thousands of Iraqi women and children.

I asked that they find out if this is killing innocents as it appears from all accounts to be genocide and that if this is true that the administration be immediately arrested and turned over to the international war crimes court.

From what the receptionist for my representative was saying they're expecting to get swamped with calls. They're watching with the sound down and even they are shaken by what they see.

The time has come to take action. I will not condone violence, but we simply must go physically into the streets and call our reps and senators and then we must march on the capitol demanding immediate resignation of the entire administration.

No more murder in our names.

128. I think this will not go well for * and his minions.

In this mornings paper Thomas Friedman, the once total supporter of the * war, said that our only choice now, after all the civilian deaths, will be to just leave iraq and let the iraqis fix it.

He said that too many of the people now hate us and what we've done for any action on our part to now be successful.

Not exactly word for word, but I'm writing from memory from this morning. The important thing is that Friedman was, until now, fully supportive of the "war to bring democracy to iraq". He's done a full one eighty. Can others be far behind?

200. Nope. Friedman was merely a useful cheerleader for
the invasion to confiscate oil. He was enthralled with the glowing, yellow brick road ideas of Kristol and Perle and Wolfowitz....Jeffersonian Democracy overtaking the M.E. so that all would become peaceful neighbors of his beloved Israel.

Ah Yes....such wonderous and beautiful thoughts are used as pretexts for conquistadors.

He will now be relegated by the Right to the junk heap of the "weak kneed liberal NYT writer.

We've got to start hammering EVERY news room, and EVERY MEMBER OF CONGRESS to express our outrage at this slaughter!!! RIGHT NOW...WHILE IT'S ON-GOING!

We need to express our outrage in the most specific terms -- to EVERY elected official in washington.

Then we need to hit the streets, and demand impeachment! These are war crimes! Call for rummy's resignation. Call for bush's impeachment.

No, I know it will never happen, but they need to know we are totally freaked out, and fed up with these atrocities being committed in OUR name with OUR tax dollars.

This is it. This does it. This truly IS WAR!! War against greed, arrogance, imperialism, REPUBLICANS and everyone who supports this illegal war.

SADDAM'S GONE! We have no business there!

accepting this. I feel paralyzed and powerless. I've called, I've faxed, I take part in weekly actions against Halliburton.

I have been worried about Fallujah since last year. It is making me crazy watching what is happening right now.

What can we do? I don't have an answer in the world. I'm just so sorry and may God have mercy on us as a nation and as a people.

Keep in mind, Blessed are the peacemakers.

One note, when I called rep's offices they told me they are not getting many calls about Fallujah. Ramp it up everyone! Keep on keeping on. I will not be silent, because if I am silent then I will be complicit.

209. Being compassionate & determined does not equal paralyzed/powerless.
We are exercising our power to be compassionate and determined. Neither equate with feeling paralyzed or powerless unless we are allowing ourselves to be infected by despair and/or hopelessness, which is exactly what the predatory tactics of force that the freon neocons want to spread in order to expand their own power.

That's the only result they're going to get. And increased resistance. I suppose they might have thought that this would diminish their morale. I'd hazard a guess that this will do nothing but harden their resolve.

163. Duty done re: CNN
Here is what I told these bastards and bimbos:

"Your coverage of the invasion/occupation of Iraq is nothing short of disgusting. You are nothing but a bunch of cheerleaders for a rogue government that is systematically wiping out people of color over a certain resource -- that is, OIL -- and the fact that they are NOT the right religion -- because they are Muslims. I will not support such actions that Mr. Bush is doing in my name. I have no quarrel with Iraqis, Muslims, or anyone else in the Middle East. And when I say "anyone else in the Middle East," I mean that Syria and Iran are next on Mr. Bush's hit list.

"I absolutely refuse to watch bloodshed being passed off as entertainment, and you, sirs and mesdames, are no longer a news network -- you are nothing but an entertainment network for the ignorant masses that make up a significant portion of this country. This is NO LONGER the nation I am obilgated to pay my taxes to, let alone the nation I pledged allegiance to as a child. Good day."

I don't know how much good this will do, but I had to get this off my chest someway, somehow. I have no plans to leave the U.S., but I am at a loss as to what I can do to fight those bastards. I have little confidence in the electoral system, and I don't know if and what I can do to change people's minds and hearts. Peace, for God's sake.

U.S. Warplanes Hit Insurgents in Fallujah

By JAYSON KEYSER, Associated Press Writer

<snip>
The second straight night of battles in Fallujah came as the extension of a fragile cease-fire ended in the turbulent city west of Baghdad. Marines have been preparing to begin patrols in the city later this week.

Tuesday's battle appeared far heavier than the previous night's clashes, in which a Marine and eight insurgents were killed — suggesting U.S. forces were trying to wear down gunmen in the Jolan neighborhood, a district of narrow alleyways and ramshackle houses.

An AC-130, a powerful gunship that can unleash a deluge of ordinance, joined 105mm howitzers in opening up on insurgent targets in the neighborhood. Gunfire and explosions reverberated for nearly two hours, and an eerie orange glow shone over the area while showers of sparks descended like fireworks.

Fires were visible in the Jolan neighborhood, and mosque loudspeakers elsewhere in the city called for firefighters. U.S. aircraft dropped white leaflets over Fallujah before nightfall, calling on insurgents to give up.

/<snip>

So the mosques were calling for firefighters...

205. Here's my letter to Calimary's list of contacts:
"Subject: The SLAUGHTER of Iraqis in their OWN country!

Dear:.......

The slaughter today in Fallujah is an OUTRAGE ON THE WORLD STAGE!

The United States has NO BUSINESS being in Iraq, much less slaughtering thousands of Iraqis.

Saddam Hussein is GONE! There never were any WMD's! Iraq had NO ties with Al Qaida before 9/11, and were NOT responsible for 9/11.

If someone came to THIS country, uninvited, and started bullying Americans, we'd be doing the same the the Iraqis are doing. We have NO RIGHT to fight them and destroy their homes and families, nor the right to destroy their cities. How would you like it if someone was doing that to YOUR family, to YOUR neighborhood?

Donald Rumsfeld should be FORCED to resign, and George Bush should be IMPEACHED AND JAILED for lying this country into war.

This is an outrage, and makes me terribly ashamed of my country.

The news media has no business cheerleading this invasion. Have you any idea of the terror that those people are living in? The HORROR that has become their lives?

This war has made America a FAR MORE dangerous place than ever before, and it is the fault of GEORGE W. BUSH.

Before the war, the Pope himself told Bush: "If you go to war in Iraq, YOU GO WITHOUT GOD!"

Pretty obvious, isn't it?"

I sent it far & wide. And called my senators & congresscritter.

"Though we can't change human nature, we can change human nurture. Most easily, we can pay closer attention to our moral compass, to our interactions each day -- and rarely do we need someone else to tell us how.

It comes down to reconsidering the ethical stands we take with each other and with all life. We might not have the moral vision of Vaclav Havel or the moral courage of Nelson Mandela, but we can foster ethical awareness and leadership in ourselves."

And you've done that, here on DU, today!

I was planning to use my day off tomorrow to relax after a long work week and to also go to a medical appointment, but have decided that in light of this attrocity I want to go to D.C. and protest.

I live in Baltimore and may take the train down unless some others are going and want to carpool. My car won't handle the trip, sadly.

I'll watch this threat to see if anyone else is planning to go and where we can meet.
