16. So do y'all have a favorite?
Spec is much more moderate, and I gotta give him props for voting "not proven" during the impeachment trial. However, I think Toomey can be easier for a Democrat to beat come November. But if Toomey wins in November, that's bad. So I think I would rather have Spec win tonight, so just in case he wins in November, at least there will still be a moderate voice instead of a wacked-out conservative.

22. Probably favour Spec too
I'd like to see that the resistance from moving from the 'centre' is the same for the right as for the left.

The springs on each side of the centre should be equally stiff (as it were) so I don't like the idea of Toomey winning especially after bush* campaigned for Spec too.

43. I hope so, the future of the Democratic Party is to lure moderate
Republicans away. Arlen losing will help big time. I wish the Club for Growth success in defeating moderate Republicans. It will allow the Dems' to forget these fickle ultra leftist and tell them to take a hike once and for all. They are not serious about obtaining political power, spend an evening at DU and you will see. I want to help the people that the left claims they represent that is why I think appealing to moderate Republican will help, because it will mean actually winning an election with more reliable voters.

33. mechanical
swing a red lever to the right which sets machine up and closes curtains.

Move mechanical switches to place your votes.

I don't know if it used cards or what, looked at least 40 years old

This in levittown between philly and trenton. Levittown started like 1953 so maybe these machines are 1953 vintage?

We use the mechanical lever machines that look like they've been around since the 1950s. As long as my vote counts, though, I don't care! What I really hate is not getting an "I Voted" sticker like I used to in Kansas.

100. I think they have gears in the back
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 10:45 PM by starroute
I can remember machines like that going back to when I was a little kid and my mother would take me into the voting booth and let me move the switches for her. I'm sure they weren't new even then.

I think it's classic early-20th century clockwork, with lots of wheels and gears, like an old-fashioned cash register. When you're done and move the big lever over, all the counters where you depressed a switch advance by one and the whole thing resets.

I love those machines. They always make me feel like a mad scientist pulling the lever to bring the monster to life.

On edit: Here are some details - http://www.cs.uiowa.edu/~jones/voting/geneva/s12.html
And a picture - http://www.cs.uiowa.edu/~jones/voting/geneva/s13.html

It says they were first used in 1892 and were universal in urban areas by 1930.

76. In most of the state, punch cards
Yes and hanging chads. I use punch card in the City of Johnstown. My sister use to use them in Butler County (She has since moved to Butler, but no one has changed from Punch cards yet, requires a vote).

Most of my area uses Punch cards, one or two areas still use paper ballots (Very few). Mechanical machines in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh). Thus the Rural area tend to get counted slower than the urban areas for the Urban areas use methods faster than paper ballots, but the more rural the area the more likely to retain paper ballot.

42. While I voted today..
I talked to a Republican who thought Toomey would pull it out. And he isn't a Toomey person. Told him that Toomey is a nut, and he only said that he doesn't come across that way. He is a Castor person. Not sure his info. means anything - he had a vague reference to the info. being given from Republicans in Harrisburg. On the local news, they did say turnout in the Philadelphia area has been light. PA Repukes chose a conservative candidate before for governor - Fisher -and that didn't turn out well for them in the general election. I'd take the risk to see Bush foiled.

74. That ain't that much.
18,000 votes could be erased easily by a late surge by Toomey in some of the later reporting precincts that heavily favor him.

81. I think it's Specter's now
the remaining votes have to go over 55-45 to Toomey which is probably unlikely given the pattern of the night.

Mind you I have had some disasterous predictions on the stockmarket thread before now ;-)

93. Still too close to call
There's about 12,000 votes difference, and about 200,000 votes left to be counted. (Assuming that 77% of precincts is close to 77% of total votes, since precincts are *supposed* to be as equal as possible in population.)

This is according to politicspa.com. She will be a strong candidate against Torsella or Schwartz. She ran in 2000 and 2002 but lost to Hoeffel each time. However, she did quite well in this pretty democratic district.

101. Pilots Oppose Senator Specter's Re-Election
Pilots Oppose Senator Specter's Re-Election
Voted "No" on Homeland Security Amendment that would
Arm Pilots and Protect America's Traveling Public

Washington, DC - Today the Airline Pilots' Security Alliance (APSA) alerted its members around the country to Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter's (R-PA) opposition to the arming of America’s airline pilots against terrorism. President George W. Bush signed the Federal Flight Deck Officer (FFDO) Program into law as part of the Homeland Security Bill, in 2002, after the United States Senate approved the program by a vote of 87-6. Senator Specter was one of the six dissenting votes.

APSA wants to make it clear to pilots and the people of Pennsylvania that Senator Specter opposed the creation of this important program, which is a vital layer of our national defense against terrorism.

"This common sense security measure was supported by liberal Democrats like Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Senator John Kerry (D-MA), but we couldn't count on the support of Arlen Specter," said Bob Lambert, former APSA president and Pennsylvania resident. "You would expect that those officials representing Pennsylvania, the site of one of the devastating September 11th attacks, would be more responsive to the security needs of the American people."

APSA is committed to passing legislation to make further improvements to the armed pilot program. To that end, the organization will use its resources to vigorously oppose any member of Congress that resists these efforts.

“Members of the public that support a strong stance on national security should not support any member of Congress that prevents a pilot from protecting our country against terrorist attacks," said First Officer Rob Sproc, Vice-President of APSA.

APSA, as a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of 40,000 pilots, has the obligation to educate the public about officials who resist vital aviation security measures.

APSA is an aviation security working group, formed by professional airline pilots from every major airline in the U.S., born in the aftermath of the terrorist atrocities committed on September 11, 2001. APSA works to shape public opinion and policy by educating other pilots and the general public and working with federal officials and policy makers. APSA has had a significant
influence on our nation's approach to airline security and has briefed numerous White House, DOT, DOJ, FAA and Congressional officials.

For more information or to schedule an interview with a pilot, please call Brian Darling at (202)486-9028.
