Lugar chides Bush for diplomacy flaws

Deft diplomacy will be needed when the United States seeks a U.N. resolution to endorse its plan to transfer power in Iraq, Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., said Monday, but within the Bush administration, "diplomacy is deficient."

President Bush's decision to invade Iraq was opposed by many countries, including several who are represented in the U.N. Security Council. Until his recent shift to seek a U.N. resolution for on the transfer of power, Bush has resisted a significant role for the international organization in reconstructing Iraq.

"Even if the decisions are correct, the diplomacy is deficient," Lugar said at a breakfast with Washington reporters. "By that I simply mean not many people agree with us, or like us or are prepared to work with us. That will really have to change."

He laid the responsibility for the poor international relations at Bush's doorstep.

"It starts with the president and proceeds, really, through the Cabinet and those who are advising him. Each administration has to determine which kind of tone it wants to establish in these matters, and that obviously starts with the president," he said.

2. He makes no sense
"Even if the decisions are correct, the diplomacy is deficient," Lugar said at a breakfast with Washington reporters. "By that I simply mean not many people agree with us, or like us or are prepared to work with us. That will really have to change."

He seems to be saying that people disagree with us, dislike us and are not prepared to work with us as a result of deficient diplomacy, rather than faulty decisions made by our leadership. Change the tone and the dumb foreigners will all of a sudden flock to our side? This guy is either racist, senile, high or any combination thereof.

3. Good at talking like he knows what he's talking about
And will fool a lot of people, until you start the analysis like you did. I admit, I've been taken in before. But I agree, he has a good point that we're liked, and a bad point about why.

7. These guys are slick
Watching C-SPAN is an interesting experience. Every time I tune in for a few hours of debates or hearings, my faith in the system is almost rekindled. Then, of course, I check the news, see the disconnect between the words and the actions and come and post something bitter here.

5. Where was Lugar in the run up to this illegal invasion/occupation
This guy is a turd who is content to critique the finer points. Hope he roasts in hell.

6. cough cough as he fastracks the hearings to confirm Negroponte
as the new ambassador to Iraq.

Heard it on NPR this a.m. Lugar is 'fast-tracking' the hearings in his committee (foreign relations?) to get Negroponte approved and confirmed for the ambassadorship to Iraq. If Little Dickie is so concerned about deft diplomacy why is he fast-tracking Negroponte. Negroponte is the epitome of the Ugly American, he is the working definition of the Ugly American.

Negroponte was present during under-handed machinations in Vietnam. Negroponte was present in Honduras in the 80's busily overlooking right-wing death squads and Iran-Contra machinations.

Lugar says with great concern and gravitas: "Each administration has to determine which kind of tone it wants to establish in these matters..." and then he fastracks the confirmation of Negroponte.

Lugar is just a smooth-talking pimp for the GOP, Bush, and Negroponte. He enables, with the fast-tracking, the very concerns he raises. What a jack-off.

8. Gee, Richard, let's see... you say WHAT?
"...not many people agree with us, or like us or are prepared to work with us. That will really have to change."

Sorry to break it to you, Mr. Lugar, but the only way that will change is to change regimes. bush has to GO. Because unless he does GO, we will be left with this schmuck representing us as a nation and being our "standard-bearer," and our "face to the world." And if the world is now comprised of "not many people agree with us, or like us, or are prepared to work with us" - we need a change, alright. STARTING AT THE TOP.

When we get a different president, that sorry, unfortunate situation WILL change.
