Mo. governor vetoes limits on medical malpractice suits

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - (KRT) - Gov. Bob Holden on Tuesday vetoed a bill placing new limitations on medical malpractice and other injury lawsuits, calling the legislation a "politically motivated gift to corporate interests."
Holden, a Democrat, said he vetoed the bill because it did not contain any insurance reforms to help stem doctors' rising malpractice insurance rates and because it imposed "draconian" restrictions on the right of injured people to sue.
"The bill sent to my desk ignores the need for insurance reform and uses the special needs of doctors as camouflage to give unwarranted protections to corporate interests," Holden said at a news conference.
Holden vetoed a similar lawsuit-reform bill last year, saying it was loaded with protections for special interests but would not really help doctors with the cost of their malpractice insurance. Though the bill the Republican-controlled legislature sent him this year was significantly scaled down, Holden said it still was bad public policy and had promised to veto it if it passed.
