Iraqis demand full sovereignty
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3664395.stm
snip
Members of Iraq's interim Governing Council have called for "nothing less than full sovereignty" after the planned transfer of power on 30 June.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said Iraq would have to "give back" some power to the US in the early days.

That caused concern among Iraqi leaders and on the United Nations Security Council which is expected to be asked to support the new government in Iraq.

UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi later told the Council the role of Iraqis was vital.

14. "functional"
if the Iraqis don't get the right to vote out ALL of the appointed leaders we are forcing on them, if they do not get the right to cancel ALL of the privatisation contracts that were made without their permission, it ain't "functional" no matter how many potholes they get filled

2. "the role of Iraqis was vital"...
well, fuck me - the inhabitants of a country are vital to its stability and prosperity. You could have knocked me over with that wisdom...

4. There is no such thing as anything but sovereignty (full) is reduntant
You either have sovereignty or you don't. Can someone be half pregeant or full pregeant? Half dead or full dead? You either are or you aren't it's an absolute.

Sovereignty is the quality or authority of being independent and in charge of the conditions you live under.

Specifically the word is used here about legally and practically arranging your affairs in such a way that you ARE in charge of your life, that you are prepared for challenges to your freedom, and that you don't unwittingly sign yourself and your family away in virtual slavery.

5. Well well well you don't say-Geesh even THEY are playing W
It's amazing at how many times and how many ways W&Co. get played and yet they are portrayed as such "strong leaders"

:eyes:

I just love the Powell comment on "giving back power" as if they ever really had it.

6. Geez, they still believe this was about "liberation" and "democracy".
Now, they are getting a taste of what it's like to be betrayed by this crooked administration.

11. Catch-22.
The only reason they've been called an "Interim Governing Council" is because it's abundantly clear to even the most detached observer that these people are about as far from being legitimate as the occupying military itself. Both the 'leaders' and the 'Constitution' are facades - with the additional window dressing of subsequent phases in reconstruction to construct a Constitution and leadership far more representative of the will of the Iraqi people.

Now we hear the "option" of purported full sovereignty -- in effect turning over Iraq permanently to a puppet regime.

I think this 'play' was planned as an option all along. It seems obvious that there was never any intention to facilitate the creation of a truly representative (let alone 'democratic') government in Iraq.

I don't think any sane person could have ever thought a prolonged occupation and multiphase 'nation building' could've ever succeeded. It's kabuki.

15. The Iraqi Gov Council was a waste of everyone's time
They should take their flag and go jump in a lake.

I agree on the sovereignty issue - you either got it, or you got nuthin.

Where is Kerry on this?
