Nobel Laureate Warns on Anti-Semitism
Wednesday April 28, 2004 3:01 PM

By GEIR MOULSON

Associated Press Writer

<snip>
BERLIN (AP) - Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel warned European and North American countries Wednesday that anti-Semitism is on the rise and fervently urged them to keep ``the poison from spreading.''

The appeal by Wiesel, a survivor of the Auschwitz Nazi death camp, marked the start of a 55-nation conference of foreign ministers called to debate ways to fight anti-Semitism, including more education and stricter law enforcement.

``Stop! Stop a disease that has lasted so long. Stop the poison from spreading,'' Wiesel said.

Wiesel, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his writings on the Holocaust and campaigning against evil in the world, pointed to violence against Jews and desecration of cemeteries in many countries.

1. Artist warns against people hating other people
It's bad. Don't do it. Don't kill either.

There. That should fix everything.

5. Yup, before "The Busholinis" took rule, anti-semitism was merely,...
,...something akin to anti-abortion extremists who murder doctors. They were few and far between. I do not even have memory of the last time I personally encountered an anti-semite. I definitely have memory of the last sexist (anti-female) remark I heard merely a few days ago.

These "Busholinis" really are polished at growing hatred and division and spreading those seeds.

4. OK, Elie, how about stopping the disease that is the war
criminal known as Sharon? How about stopping the hate emanating from the right-wing Likudnuts now running Israel? How about giving the Palestinians a fair shake? How about stopping the murder of their children, and the choking of their society? How about stopping the apartheid policies now embraced by a majority of Israelis? How about some peace?

Similarly, I would ask many of these same questions of Arafat, and Hamas. There are few innocents in this battle, only the children, both Israeli, and Palestinian.

If Mr. Wiesel were truly concerned about spreading anti-Semitism, then he should be equally concerned about some of the factors that are causing the spread. The failure of so many of these people who constantly warn of anti-Semitism, to recognize Israel's part in helping to foment it, wreaks of the same bias they accuse others of having.

15. Who should get the credit
every time some mercenary gets his just deserts?

The war was not supposed to be against the people of Iraq.
It was supposed to be against Saddam who had weapons of mass destruction he planned to launch at the US.
Well there are no weapons of mass destruction.
Saddam-a-like has been plucked from a spider hole.
Why are they killing the people of Fallujah?
Why are they killing "insurgents?"
Why are they killing Iraqi civilians?

Because the Iraqi are evil Muslims who deserve to die and this whole thing is their fault and they bombed the the Maine, the Alamo, Pearl Harbor, and created halitosis which is why Halliburton needs to get all the money being allocated to the war against terror.

It is not like we are blaming the target or anything, now are we?

9. Remember that Iraqi kid, Ali?
The one who had his arms and legs blown off when his family was smoked by US bombs?

"What it comes down to is this: We have a moral obligation to intervene where evil is in control. Today, that place is Iraq."
-- Elie Weisel

Hey, Bremer,
sounds like he just called you out.
Stop the carnage already.

11. Exactly. Hating Sharon and Co is not anti-Semitism, just good sense!
You can love Jews and hate Zionists. Certainly doesn't
make you anti-Semitic!

Not only can you love Jews and hate Zionists, you can love Jews AND Zionists and hate Sharon/Likud. Imagine that.

7. He lost me here.
"He said he found ``particularly contemptuous'' comparisons of Israel's policy toward the Palestinians to Nazi Germany's atrocities against the Jews. "

Well, let's see Elie. When you launch an armed invasion, occupy a territory, deny the local population the right to govern themselves, jail them without trial, assassinate their leaders, build wall's to restrict their movement, close their schools, and treat them like subhumans, people are bound to make comparisons.

No, Israel isn't killing them off in gas chambers. It is, however, making use of the exact same tactics Germany used in the territories it occupied during WWII to repress the activities of freedom fighters. Collective punishment, detention without trial.

10. Now, I wonder why anti-Semitism is on the rise?
Is it because more and more people are speaking out against the Sharon policies and the CHARGES of 'anti-Semitism' are increasing in response to dissent? Or are people just getting tired of Jews having it both ways, hiding behind 'anti-Semitism' charges while upholding some of the most ergregious, illegal, immoral behaviors against the Palestinian people? And I guess Bush's one-sided support of Israel no matter what they do has nothing to do with it?

12. i think there's more to it than that
What Israel's government is doing should in no way impact on a jewish cemetary getting vandalized in France.

Or someone having a nazi symbol spraypainted on their home.

Some people have legit grievances with Israel.
And others will just look for any excuse to blame Jews.

It's that simple.
