Sydney - East Timorese President Xanana Gusmao has accused Australia of stealing oil from the impoverished former Portuguese colony it helped liberate from Indonesian control five years ago.
Gusmao claimed on Wednesday that Australia cheated by fixing an unfair interim boundary in the Timor Sea that separates the world's newest country from the region's richest nation.
In an interview with Portuguese newspaper Publico, Gusmao accused Canberra of acting in bad faith in talks to set a permanent maritime boundary.
"We are protesting loudly so the world will learn what is going on," the legendary freedom fighter said. "This is not right. The country which steals from us then organises conferences regarding transparency
anti-corruption."
