Weapons destruction too slow
Washington - The destruction of chemical weapons under an international convention is far behind schedule, according to a US government report released on Tuesday, highlighting fears that terrorists could obtain them before they are destroyed.

Neither the United States nor Russia - which together possess 95% of the world's declared stockpile of chemical arms - are likely to meet the deadline set in the 1997 Convention for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, even if it is extended to 2012, the US Government Accounting Office, an investigative arm of the US Congress, said in its report.

"While the (convention) has played an important role in reducing the risks from chemical weapons, the (convention's) non-proliferation goals have proven more difficult to achieve than originally anticipated," the report said.

With a 2007 deadline looming, only 11% of the 70 000 tons of declared chemical weapons had been destroyed by November, the report said.

2. well duh
Well, why would America want to destroy their weapons of Mass Destruction. If someone decideds to attack us, I can gaurentee you that the U.S. especially now, under bush, wants to make sure that the country responsible gets one to the face, a few hundred times.

Its not like any promises in the past have held up anyway... Kyoto, UN, and a few others.

4. Ooh, it sounds like the UN had better impose sanctions.
And force the US and Russia to admit UN inspectors. Should there be no-fly zones?

Maybe someone had better invade to remove the undemocratic governments that have refused to reduce their chemical weapons on schedule.

And I'm pretty sure that the U.S. is linked to 9/11. Do you think maybe that Canada might invade? They could join with other countries that export medications to the U.S. -- a 'coalition of the pilling,' so to speak.

;-)
