Michigan workers paid too much (says state GOP chair)
http://www.mlive.com/news/grpress/index.ssf?/base/news-14/1083163979157460.xml

<snip>

The Republican state party chairwoman raised the issue Tuesday when
she issued a press
release saying high
wages were partly to
blame for Michigan's
economic woes.

"Many, if not most,
of the economic
problems in
Michigan are a result
of high wages and a
tax and regulatory
structure that makes
this state
uncompetitive,"
DeVos said in the prepared statement.

The press release was issued as DeVos criticized Gov. Jennifer
Granholm for pinning the blame on President Bush for Michigan's loss of
nearly 200,000 manufacturing jobs. Granholm was in Washington, D.C.
with U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow touting plans to protect manufacturing
jobs.

Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Butch Hollowell wasted no time
in pouncing on the comments.

"I hate to tell Betsy DeVos this, but high wages are not a bad thing,"
Hollowell said. "They're good, and we need more of them."

4. Well, if corporate "profits" and "prices" were lower, wages could be lower
Of course, this country has built its wealth on slave labor of one kind or other...on the notion that it has been good for the slaves as well as the masters.

6. I would like to personally apologize for Betsy DeVos.
She's out of her goddamn mind and seems to think she rules the state.

She doesn't realize that people voted for their GOP representatives and senators in their districts, not the Iron Fist of Betsy DeVos that forces GOP reps into doing stuff.

13. Even the fat man (Engler) hates her
She tried to push through a very unpopular voucher bill that the voters voted down by a very large percentage. He was opposed to the bill for some reason, and was very angry with her for bucking his policy ideas.

Before she complains anymore, she needs to have her family's company pay all those taxes they owe the canadian government from the 80s. There's a reason why everyone calls it "Scamway".

Incidentally, my dad sold janitor supplies to Amway, because their products suck.

Seriously, the ignorance of these people HAS NO BOUNDS.

Boundless ignorance.

Let's start by cutting her wages . . . surely she is making more than the average Michigan worker . . .

I'm sure this person doesn't think her income is too high. We need more Republicans to come out and admit that they believe that wages should be lower so corporate profits could be higher. OF course most of the freeper morans out there think that their own salary is justified, its everyone else thats freeloading.

20. how is it possible that
every freeper owns his own business? have you ever noticed this? and all those foaming at the mouth conservatives bitching about taxes owns his own business. "I started my own business so that I could provide a better life for my kids, blah blah blah" Can there BE that many businesses in America? That's fine if they have their own business but it pisses me off when those A-holes think they are better than me or harder working because of it. I work hard too so f*ck off freepers. And while I'm bitching, you're not better than me because you have kids. For God's sake, mosquitoes can reproduce. Just something I noticed.

11. So are we talking Blue collar or White collar?
Why is it that these guys always know how to fix things? Why does the fix always involve screwing the blue collar worker?

If this were a democrat calling for lower pay for corporate executives they would be cursing him and calling him a communist.

18. Exactly Sandpiper....the Dems need to publicize this over & over
to Michigan voters. They need to mention it every time they open their mouths to speak. They need to keep pointing out that THIS is the entire republican agenda, that hides behind the "right to life" bullshit.

Let DeVos hear it as she thrashes about in her nightmares.

23. Which Workers Are These, Betty?
There are precious few working anymore, based on how my business has declined since your "hero" stole the White HOuse. And remember the $1billion state deficit? Those taxes come from people who are getting paid--and there are damn few left! Why don't you go peddle your Amway in some other country--Iraq maybe?

Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 06:28 PM by Mari333
I was at Michigan Works offices today looking for a job. I am calling for one tomorrow. But when I flipped thru the book of jobs available, I found mostly 5-6-7$ hr jobs
that Repub should try for one week to live on that
they are totally out of touch.
edit to add: Kiss my ass Betty DeVoss.

27. Folks, could this be a veiled attack on union workers?
I figure she must feel she is speaking to someone. Could this be a message designed to create further anger at unions and therefore the Dems ahead of the election? Sorry, I don't live in Mich. and so have no feel for the context. Whadaya think?

28. This is vintage Top Ten material
right up there with "trees cause forest fires", "we had to destroy that village in order to save it", etc.

Note how DeVos conflates the high wages (that she's really attacking) with high taxes and burdensome regulations (c'mon, no one's for high taxes and burdensome regulations, right?)

If the Michigan repuke party should outsource her job (hey, there's a thought), she can always catch on as a local Rush-wannabe.

Rich DeVos owns the Orlando Magic and got mad because the City of Orlando wouldn't build him a new multi-multi-million dollar stadium for his lousy basketball team. Does anyone have the phone number for the Michigan GOP, I'll call.
