Gore Donates More Than $6M to Democrats

By RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer

"WASHINGTON - Former Vice President Al Gore, pledging to help John Kerry fight "outrageous and misleading" Republican attacks, said Wednesday that he will donate more than $6 million to various Democratic Party groups.

"Drawing from funds left over from his 2000 campaign, Gore pledged to donate $4 million to the Democratic National Committee . The party's Senate and House committees would each get $1 million, and the party from Gore's home state of Tennessee would receive $250,000.

"...In addition to distributing the money, Gore is releasing the entire $240,000 left in his recount fund, money raised to challenge results of the Florida election, to the Florida Democratic Party. ..."

GO AL!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Wow! That's great...
Are these donations unlimited because they came from prior campaign funds?

3. dunno, but ...
From the story:

"...Under FEC rules, money in such compliance funds can only be used to pay for lawyers and accountants to comply with federal election law. But the rules also permit money left over in such accounts to be transferred to a national, state or local party committee, or to be donated to charity.

"Gore could not transfer or donate the money directly to the Kerry campaign. But if he transferred the money to the DNC, for example, the restrictions under which the money was originally raised would no longer be in effect, FEC officials said."

4. "funds left over from his 2000 campaign"
Good to know he was holding back. No since going all out.

I'm glad Al's doing this, but I can't help but wonder if another $6 million spent in 2000 might have tipped the scales.

5. some of that money
Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 12:41 PM by gauguin57
may have come in after the election. Some people contribute when a campaign is over, to help defray expenses already incurred -- maybe, in the case of the 2000 election, people contributed during the month-long legal fight? I don't know ... I'm just suggesting.

Anyone know?

Also ... it's been four years. Could some of that be interest on the original sum?

8. Well...
After reading gauguin57's excerpt, it seems that these funds could only be used for legal and accounting fees for Gore's campaign. Now, in the DNC's hands, they can use them any way they please.

24. That is my earnest belief this year.
That there is no more important way to help the poor or the victims of injustice than to get rid of Bush.

18. now ain't the time for charity
now is the time to kick ass. these funds should help do just that.

once we win the election, we can all have the warm fuzzies, feel real good and "charitable".

there is a time for everything.

10. Excellent news. Thanks a lot.
Al's a trooper, for sure.

As for charity, that would come from his personal funds, as anyone could imagine, after taking time to think it over.
