Iraq modifies new flag after protests
Iraq modifies new flag after protests
Wed 28 April, 2004 19:40

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's U.S.-appointed Governing Council has unveiled a modified version of the new national flag after protests that the original was similar to Israel's.

A pale blue crescent and two lines on the bottom were given a darker shade of blue and some dimensions were changed, but it was not clear if the new version would satisfy protesters. A yellow strip divides the blue lines.

29. "Kurdish colours" (red, yellow and green)
"However, when HEP deputies went to take up their parliamentary seats, there was a near-riot in the assembly. Leyla Zana, a HEP deputy, appeared wearing the "Kurdish colours" (red, yellow and green) in her hair and announced in Kurdish that she was taking her parliamentary oath in Turkish under protest."
http://hrw.org/campaigns/turkey/kurd.htm

So, it would make more sense for the flag to include all of these three colours. I believe the old flag already had white, black, green and red, so they only needed to add some yellow to include the Kurds. The new flag is too illogically chosen, with regard to the Iraqi national heritage to not seem like a deliberate provocation.

6. So let's take a moment
This council can't keep the electricity on, get the water running, create any jobs, create a defense force, keep order or create a flag.

Now of all the above, which one should be the easiest?

They can't even create a damn flag.

New one taken from this article:

Governing Council modifies new flag
From AP
April 29, 2004
A NEW flag approved this week by Iraqi leaders will only be temporary, officials said Wednesday, as they officially presented the design - with slight differences after protests that the flag recalled that of Israel.

The design was more or less the same as the one announced earlier this week: two blue stripes along the bottom with a yellow stripe between them, and a crescent above them in a white field.

But the stripes and crescent were a considerably darker shade of blue than the original verison published in an Iraqi newspaper, which had shown light blue stripes.

Many had said the light blue stripes were too reminiscent of light blue bands on the Israeli flag. Hameed al-Kafaei, the council's spokesman, said there hasn't been any changes to the colors. "The copies you saw in newspapers were not accurate," he said.

16. Absurd
Half the people of Iraq were wondering why the GC was bothering to waste time on nonsense, the other half were super-pissed that they'd lost their historically cemented red, green, black and white colors. So the imbeciles in the GC turn the flag a darker shade of blue, thereby managing to further piss off all parties. the Iraqis will burn this flag wherever it appears, and the Iraqi resistnce will fly the old flag in outright defiance of the US/UK colonizing powers. Disgusting and, moreover, supremely stupid.

Flying the new flag will show you are loyal to the new regime. Perhaps the BFEE will try this out in the U.S. if they manage to steal the next election.

35. why a new flag at all?
What was wrong with the old red, black and green one? There is something very sad about the flags of occupied countries. I have a little Tibetan flag I display, because thousands cannot, and many have died and been tortured for doing so. I also have a tiny Palestinian flag since the first Intifada and I heard of a child whose arm was broken by the IDF for drawing one in his schoolbook.
The new Iraqi flag is butt ugly, no one likes it, let them select their own flag. I don't care if it's the Jolly Roger, let them choose it.

38. The green and the black are Islam's traditional colors
It is said that green was the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUHN) favorite colors. The red does represent pan Arabism.

The Arabic text for "Allah is Great" comes from the Holy Qur'an.

42. One more thing no one's mentioned
Taking the crescent (political symbol of the Ottoman empire) as a symbol for Islam is a classic misconception. What it really represents, effectively, is that outsiders with no understanding of the land are now in charge -- so I guess it really does fit the flag.

The comparision to Israels was pushing it. But I do believe it should appeal to a majority of the citizens.

No reason to keep the old Iraqi flag when the country is fundamentally different. No use in busting the flag just caush bush and his crew are complete morons.

48. Here is a thought
A committee of American stooges appointed by Saddam Hussein should have the opportunity to redesign the U.S. flag. After all, "everything changed with 911". Then, both countries can decide to keep or reject their new flag - a package deal, they either both accept or both reject. The good thing about this plan, is that way Iraqis wouldn't feel like an imperialist power was forcing a new flag on them, since it would be reciprocal.
