Radioactive wastewater from German nuclear plant spills into Rhine
Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 03:39 PM by MaineDem
KARLSRUHE, Germany, April 28 — About 8,000 gallons of radioactive water poured into the Rhine river in southwestern Germany after a pump malfunctioned at a nuclear plant, a power company said Wednesday.

...

The ministry also said the contamination was not strong enough to pose a health risk.

2. a dental x-ray...sounds harmless?
''The water was lightly contaminated,'' said Ommeln, who likened the radioactivity exposure of drinking a gallon of the water to having a dental X-ray.

3. What's that old saying, an x-ray a day?
Oh, wait. Last I checked, radioactive water is bad for you.

5. Philippsburg again
Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 04:20 PM by Kellanved
The headline maker of the German nuclear plants. In 2001 the plant got temporarily shut down, because the operator had disabled the emergency shut-down system, claiming that a false alarm would cause too high costs otherwise.
Both Philippsburg reactors have a long list of mishaps, close-meltdowns and glitches; I can't wait for all those rustbuckets to get shut-down for good.

For the record: The ministry saying "drinking one liter is not worse than a dental x-ray" was not the (green)federal ministry, but a state ministry in a conservative state.

8. WTF???
How in the world does a plant accidentally spill 8000 gallons of nuclear waste in the Rhine? You mean to tell me they didn't have some sort of precautionary measure in place to prevent that shit from going right into the Rhine? I agree with the guy who said humans suck.
