White House braced for latest assault by hardback
White House braced for latest assault by hardback

A former US
ambassador will this
week 'out' a government
official who named his
wife as a CIA operative.
Andrew Buncombe
examines the latest
'must-read' memoir
tackling the Bush
administration

29 April 2004

The Bush administration is bracing itself
for the latest memoir by a former insider.
Joe Wilson, a former ambassador, will
this week reveal the name of the
government official who "outed" his wife -
revealing her identity as a CIA operative
in apparent revenge for his role in proving
the White House made false claims about
Iraq's efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

But in what has increasingly becoming the
habit during Mr Bush's presidency, Mr
Wilson will not make his claims on
television, at a press conference or even in
a newspaper column but between the
covers of a "must-read" book. His
memoir, The Politics of Truth: Inside
the Lies that Led to War and Betrayed
My Wife's CIA Identity, is published
tomorrow.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day for
Mr Wilson, a former ambassador to
several African countries and a member of
President Bill Clinton's national security
council. For while the initial "scoop" will
appear in his book, if precedent is any
guide the revelation will quickly be
devoured by all other media and Mr
Wilson will likely be filling the airwaves
and broadcasts that day.

This is dependent, of course, on the
"scoop"not being leaked in advance of publication. Mr Wilson knows
the score on this and yesterday he declined to spill the beans. "No, I
can't do that," he said. He did, however, "reveal" that the movie
project of the book was not so far advanced that actors had been
selected. "I will say that if this becomes a movie I am happy with
that," he added. "This is a story that people should be told."

2. i wish i could afford all these books,
but they dip into my Kerry fund, my MoveOn.org fund and my newest cause the DU.com fund. DU gets my next $25 spare "donation" dollars.

I'll just have to wait for someone to "loan" me the books.

12. I buy them, read them, then donate them to our book store...
at the Unitarian Church. They resell them (around $10 donation) to someone, who reads them and re-donates them for resale again.

Do you have a group or church who could do this?

17. A tip
Amazon has used books available immediately after the book comes out. That's why authors hate Amazon. I don't buy anything from them. But watch the page for the book at Amazon and see if they don't have used copies really fast.

26. These will all be out in paperback, after multiple printings.
Don't ya worry.

This is GREAT! This AND Howard Stern (whose ratings have gone UP since his FCC problems surfaced, by the way, and who spends every day of his life bashing bush now) AND the latest ratings showing CNN is losing to Pox news - especially with Paula Zahn, and OUR DU favorite, Wolf Blitzer.

Dems like Frank Lautenberg fighting back. The right-wing whack-job in Pennsylvania lost last night, and - well - things seem to be looking up a little more, don't they?

By the way, my husband and I just figured out - Howard Stern's biggest, most loyal demos are white male 25 - 54. Guess what else they are? NASCAR dads.

32. Try the library
At ours, (King County) you can request books online and they'll deliver them to your nearest branch.

I know it supports the Dem cause better if you buy them, but if you have to choose between donating directly to the party or donating indirectly by buying books...direct is better.

Wilson will out the real outer.

So Scooter Libby can't fall on his sword for Cheney. (If it was Cheney.)

Did Wilson have to have the book approved (vetted) by the White House?

If he did then they've already got their lies in order....if not...

well...let's just call it the White House Macarena....hands over ears, hands over mouth, BOTH hands over the butt.....

He should be Kerry's partner. He is well-defined and has clearly maintained his sense of humanity.

She tried (in the italicized sentences) to get his dander up..

He stayed calm, smooth and unruffled.

A Great running mate for Kerry.

They compliment each other well.

The country will see them both as a Class Act!

There is NO silver bullet, no wooden stake. We have decades of work ahead of grinding pain and labor to rid ourselves of this incredible facist hoard. Keep fighting for truth. Keep remembering that we must all hang TOGETHER. Or else...

BTW, did anybody hear that brief reference on Randi Rhodes today? Middle of second hour where is sorta sounded like she was telling a caller that Friday would be her last day? She did not elaborate. Anybody?

I mean is there any particular reason why his answer will be factual rather than speculative? Granted it's more informed speculator than some, but it's still just gonna be speculation, right? I mean, if he had the goods on whoever he thinks it is, wouldn't he have turned it over, wouldn't there be indictments...?

24. The WH placed a gag order on Wilson-
so he can't take it to court.

He has sort of gone around the issue by telling the story indirectly but making the "leaker" the focus of the story.

I like Joe Wilson. He would be a good man for Kerry's administration.

By the way, do you remember months ago, when Wilson was saying he KNEW who it was who outed his wife. Wouldn't say. I've read somewhere (talking points memo, maybe?) that he may not outright SAY who it is, but he's written it in such a way that he says it leaves no doubt whatsoever. I think the way he phrased it was: those who read it will be able to put the pieces together and come out with a satisfying conclusion. Or words to that effect. My bookshelves are getting awfully clogged. And that's more than okay by me! Every book is another brick in the wall...

And mind you, I have YET to hear of ANY big buys of any of these anti-bush books for whacko groups to use for book burnings. Any book burning stories out there? No, there aren't. People are buying these books - to read.

Throw another log on the fire, friends!

And remember - now is NOT the time to let yourselves become complacent. Victory is not ours yet. Don't forget how important it is to stoke that fire. Wilson, Clarke, John Dean, and the rest of 'em are throwing logs onto the fire. Air America - a little bit, and Howard Stern - a huge lot more. But WE, TOO, have to fan the flames with our own activism. DO NOT GIVE UP. DO NOT SIT BACK AND GET LAZY. DO NOT ASSUME THE TOAST IS CHARRED JUST YET. November's still a long way off.

EYES ON THE PRIZE, GUYS...

They know the SOB(s) who blew her cover and they know this chickenshit White House of chickenhawks wants to blame them (through their agency the CIA) for 9/11 and the alleged poor/false intelligence that the Bushistas used to make their case against Iraq. And it pisses them ALL off. The spooks will get those bastards overtly or covertly, one way or another ...

Novak said that he called the CIA to check the story out with them. They told him not to report it, but being the good little Bush ass-kisser that he is, he could not wait to report it. Isn't it possible that the person Novak checked with was a friend of Plame's (and possibly Wilson) and let him know about it? And Chris Matthews called Wilson and told him that Rove told him (Chris) that Wilson's wife was fair game. I think he really knows who it is.

That the one who contacted the press is the ONLY leaker?

Seems to me, that one person could have discovered her identity and told/intimated/greatly hinted to another person that he should be the one to contact the Press, thus protecting himself.2 Leakers, one up VERY HIGH, is how I see it.
