(Detroit) Teachers to get layoff notices today (1950 jobs)

About 1,400 Detroit teachers and 550 administrators and principals should expect to receive layoff notices in the mail by today.

Some workers may be recalled during the summer after officials have a better idea of what next year's budget will be. But district officials warned that the employees should not get their hopes up.

"Do we expect that the vast majority will be called back? I would say no," said Debra Williams, the district's chief human resources officer.

School officials had estimated earlier this month that 900 teachers, mostly those who weren't certified, would get pink slips. The district actually mailed pink slips to 1,200 certified teachers with less than four years of experience and to 250 noncertified teachers, according to the teachers union.

The states are starving for funds, but *, et al, cut federal revenues which could be used to help fund IDEA, etc.

How is this supposed to fit into "No Child Left Behind?" What a colossal failure, like Iraq. I guess the people didn't realize Shrub was going to declare war on our children.
