ASHEVILLE - Beth Whitener would rather the country see her husband's face and hear his name on national television than see his moment of remembrance get caught up in politics.
Pfc. Joey Whitener is one of more than 700 service members the news show "Nightline" will feature tonight in a 40- minute broadcast to be pre-empted in Asheville and seven other markets served by Sinclair Broadcast Group.
Anchor Ted Koppel will read the names of military members who died in combat and noncombat situations as their pictures appear on the screen. The ABC program typically airs at 11:35 weeknights on WLOS/Channel 13.
Sinclair in pre-empting the show Thursday said it amounted to anti-war propaganda, prompting national debate over the show's intent and the company's motives.
Most viewers in the WLOS broadcast market in Western North Carolina will not be able to see the show.
