Ex-Congresswoman Makes Bid for Old Seat

By DICK PETTYS
Associated Press Writer

ATLANTA (AP) -- Cynthia McKinney, the former Georgia congresswoman defeated after accusing President Bush of ignoring warnings of the Sept. 11 attacks, qualified Friday to seek her old seat.

Known for her outspoken and often provocative comments during five terms in Congress, McKinney was asked if she had mellowed during her two-year absence from Washington.

"I have continued to speak out against George Bush's war and I will continue to speak out against George Bush's war," she told supporters.

She qualified on the final day to place her name on the July 20 Democratic primary ballot.<snip>

3. How appropriate..
...I just became employed again, and I can't think of a better use for my money. Well, defeating Bush....but....this is good too.

whose biggest contributor was Saudi Arabia!

Pushing her to the top will only hurt the Democrats!

Not one dime was donated to Cynthia McKinney from anyone who wasn't an American citizen/resident or American group.

7. You know...
Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 11:39 AM by Concerned GA Voter
...even if her biggest contributor WAS Saudi (and I'm not saying it's true, I really don't know) you can NOT tell by her behavior. So what's the problem?

Now if Bandar was paying her to shill for Bush, I'd have a problem with her. But she seems perfectly well principled to me.

Would you care to link to information that will change my mind? Any instance where her Saudi contributors bought favors will do.

On edit: spelling, pheh

8. I care about her voting record and her actions, not her contributors.
She's a bold progressive voice that's needed. If the Democratic leadership tries to freeze out the left, they should not complain when the left organizes against them. We need people like McKinney in congress working hard for common people.

"whose biggest contributor was Saudi Arabia!"

From the analysis at opensecrets.org, you seem to be hallucinating.

18. Perhaps DU'ers do, but not her local constituents
Many DU'ers selfishly believe that every Democratic representative is there to represent the interests of the left-wing fringe of the party. But a representative owes their primary allegiance to their constituents -- the people who actually live in the district and whose votes put them in office in the first place. McKinney forgot this, and her arrogance cost her.

Same tired old crap you spew.

I am soooo surprised!

Go Cynthia.

Now THERE's a REAL Patriot!

Wonder when she'll start saying "I told you so" to all her critics. But she's a classy lady in all the sense of the word, so she'll most assuredly not.

She WAS right after all, wasn't she?

15. I believe Cynthia McKinney would declassify MKULTRA outrages
once and for all, and put the perpetrators in prison or on trial for their lives. We have political prisoners in America today that have consistently spoke of government harassment, which, like voice-to-skull communications was written up as a mental disorder by spook shrinks, our mental health profession is beginning to come to grips with the fact of mind invasive technology in calling for a new examination of the diagnostic criteria of psychosis

30. I am very glad to hear this.
I saw McKinney speak at a rally in Washington once, and have not forgotten her courage.

About Saudi support, does that make her a likely candidate for some of "Bush's" cross-over support, since he is owned lock-stock-and-(oil)barrel by Saudis?

31. The problem here is that the Dem party is so screwed up
that we end up with 3 good candidates for this seat, and will probably lose Zell Miller's seat.

Candidates for the 4th district:
McKinney
Cathy Woolard- current (openly gay) City Council Chair
Liane Levetan- former Dekalb County CEO- very popular and well known.
Nadine Thomas- African-American female State Senator.
(and 3 or 4 others as well)

I am not certain Denise Majette can win that Senate seat. This state is divided, and although she is centrist, she has no money compared to the millionaire Repub's she is running against.

33. I suppose I am a glutton for it, but I am less than thrilled
And yes, I am one of those EVIL North DeKalb types that everyone blames, even though McKinney lost the whole county not just my part.

I am not here to particularly defend the very non-descript Denise Majette (in fact, you will never see me do that, I could take her or leave her). But McKinney's legislative record is VERY bare, I seem to recall something around six bills authored. (not counting the one to rename a post office that was co-authored by all Georgia reps, including Bob Barr, which was the only one that passed.)

Going off opensecrets.org, her last election campaign was DOMINATED by out-of-state contributions, which makes it hard for me to believe to she particularly represents me. And she has never repudiated her father's blaming of the J-E-W-S for her defeat (which would make me feel better, yes). Plus, I am quite tired of Georgia sending up Congresspeople that makes the news because they said something really insane.

We are talking about my rep here, and I REALLY don't want Cynthia back. Just my $0.02

37. Her father is a negative influence,
but he is her father. It is unfortunate that people will attribute to her things he says, and be critical of her for not repudiating her own father, but that's just the way it is.

Me, I happen to like those who speak out, even if they stick their foot in their mouths sometimes. (Yes, I was a Dean supporter.)I like Robert Byrd. I like Dennis Kucinich. I liked Martin Luther King, and Bobby Kennedy. I am grateful to those who speak out, like Paul O'Neill, Richard Clark, Hans Blix, Michael Moore, Greg Palast.

That 4th district must be a tough crowd: Majette is too "blah", but McKinney is too controversial. That leaves, hmmm, ...anybody?
