At hearing, Wolfowitz falls short
By Associated Press | April 30, 2004

WASHINGTON -- Asked how many American troops have died in Iraq, the Pentagon's No. 2 civilian estimated yesterday the total was about 500 -- more than 200 soldiers short.

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was asked about the toll at a hearing of a House Appropriations subcommittee. "It's approximately 500, of which . . . approximately 350 are combat deaths," he responded.

"He misspoke," spokesman Charley Cooper said later. "That's all."

5. nope, wrong answers
he stuck to the talking point, when yuo look at the numbers about 500 have died in combat. For the administration the rest don't matter. So technically he was correct from that Point of View.

Thankfully those with more than two brain cells can see through the lie right through...

29. No, he didn't stick to the talking point:
he said about 500, of which about 350 had died in combat. He wasn't even correct from the Bushista pov.

These guys exist in the realm of theory. Flesh and blood considerations don't enter into it. Nor do they COUNT, apparently.

when I heard this. I was also disappointed that Ted Koppel said on the O'Franken Factor that he didn't think it was bad that Wolfowitz didn't know. Pathetic.

11. Yep, we heard about that "crime" for AGES, and it was so easy to grasp
He simply got the guy who HAD accompanied him before confused with the guy who accompanied him the last time. As in, SO WHAT?

You would have thought he had taken a gun and shot someone. Unbearable.

Not only are they petty, they are downright vicious.

Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 01:09 PM by hunter
Paul Wolfowitz is "Bat Boy's" evil twin. Or else he's that little creature Jabba the Hutt kept on a leash in Star Wars, except that Jabba the Hutt was much more competent and ethical than anyone in the Bush Administration.

25. Paul "Salacious Crumb" Wolfowitz
Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 03:42 PM by patriotvoice
Haha, man that's funny.

"One of the most annoying critters in the galaxy, Salacious B. Crumb was the favored jester in the court of Jabba the Hutt. The beak-nosed pot-bellied miscreant had a habit of breaking into a nerve-wracking cackle whenever the mood struck his flighty little brain. The creature had a knack for mimicry, and would pester many by constantly repeating what was said to him."

14. Watch for the lies. This guy is a chronic liar.
He twists words, inflates, minimizes, skirts the issues and generally bends sentences to fit him.

So what about an "approximate" death. Can a soldier be "approximately" dead?

21. He can count, he just isn't keeping track.
Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 02:46 PM by Dhalgren
He just doesn't care enough about that "aspect" of this imperial war to have those numbers at his finger tips. Most of us would like to think that anyone whose job entails sending thousands of soldiers out to be maimed and killed for your own proffit would, at least, keep up with the casualty count. But this fucking murderer is so callous, he can't be bother by the "little things". There will be a reckoning - there must be.

18. Not too many of these guys
outshine the Bush. It is a disease of any administration that the top sets the tone, almost miraculously. Out of touch moron seems the defining job description for all of them. Even if they are stooges from the same mold they can't seem to rise above Bush's level of performance.

Pathetic self-confidence, projected assurance and endless insults to the real world, real values, and the intelligence of every human on the planet. By their deeds and results they are very evidently evil except in their own minds(maybe). Falling short or missing the mark afflict us all, but murder for profit and lying seems pretty classic enough even without fanaticism thrown into the brew.

23. Of cource, he errs on the low end
How the Deputy Defense Secretary can not have those numbers on the tip of his tongue shows his priorities aren't about the "minor issues" like soldiers and death.

He's a heck of a guy, as nice a person as you'll ever see, and couldn't be more well-balanced mentally. He has everyone's best interest at heart.

28. He misspoke? Someone who cares wouldn't misspeak that way.
A deputy defense secretary should know, and should be able to report clearly and accurately. A chickenhawk incompetent, however, might misspeak -- or might simply lie despite knowing that those asking already knew.
