Bush to impose Syria sanctions soon
Fri 30 April, 2004 20:50

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House says it will soon impose sanctions on Syria for supporting terrorism and failing to stop guerrillas from entering Iraq.

"Those concerns need to be addressed. Syria needs to take them seriously and work to address those concerns. But we're going to continue to move forward on these sanctions," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters on Friday.

"We'll have more to say on that very soon," McClellan added.

Two U.S. lawmakers, who helped push legislation through Congress to sanction Syria, complained earlier this week that President George W. Bush appeared to be appeasing Damascus by not implementing the penalties under the so-called Syria Accountability Act.

The lawmakers, Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Florida Republican, and Eliot Engel, a New York Democrat, said they were preparing legislation for stiffer penalties on Syria and additional measures to isolate and weaken its government.

1. Guess they figure Iraq about as FUBAR as they can get it.
Time to move on and get into fresh trouble.

Sure seems like they are doing everything possible to assure somebody pulls an attack before the election.

4. Why can't the US prevent "foreign fighters" from entering I-raq
We are the ones that invaded I-raq - not Syria.

We are legally charged with I-raq's security - not Syria.

This is the Chimp's problem - not Syria's...

More fucked-up neocon logic....

7. Syria has been remarkably cooperative from all appearances.
There is a lot of traffic across the Iraqi-Syrian border. If the US wants to prevent people from coming in, then they can seal the border, which would require many thousands more troops of course. It's the US's problem, not Syria's.

Just imagine what would happen if the neo-conservative gang managed to goad Bush into waging war against the people of Syria as well... This would merge the Israel/Palestine and Iraq theaters into one pan-Arab field of struggle. I don't see it happening since obviously the White House is in retreat mode overseas.

If Assad were strategically adept, he would take a very hard line--he really has little to lose under the current circumstances.

9. We'll have more to say on that very soon
Will the US citizens be seduced into another war?

I'll bet that they will, as long as there is the hope of cheaper gas prices and more jobs. These were the kind of issues that allowed the Nazis to get away with it in the 30's.

12. I said it before and I'll say it again
The occupying power (the CPA) is responsible for the internal security of the occupied territory (Iraq). Syria need not lift a finger, and should not. Needless to say, these sanction will be US only, and no other nation on earth (not even the British) will comply with them. Bush is increasingly isolated and impotent, and Scott McClellan sounds increasingly like a shrill and neutered former bully. Done.

13. If that's true..
that only america will have these sanctions in place, then only american corporations will be hurt by these sanctions.

I have absolutely no problem with that, since american capitalism was one of the biggest cheerleaders for the Iraq war.
