Asian population surging across America
FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- Asians are projected to be the fastest-growing major population category over the next half-century, outpacing blacks, whites and Hispanics. Recent Census Bureau projections show the Asian population could grow by a third, to 14 million, by 2010 and more than triple to 33 million in 2050.

Immigrants from India and Vietnam contributed to the population surge during the 1990s. That's when the Eden Center strip mall took hold in Falls Church, Va., about nine miles west of the nation's capital.

On a recent weekday afternoon, shoppers strolled down the corridors and sidewalks of the 120-shop mall with bags and children in hand. A group of older men huddled around a table watching two others play a game of Chinese chess, while some visitors perused videos at a rental store. The yellow-and-red striped flag of the former South Vietnam fluttered high above the parking lot, next to an American flag.

The scents of herbs and spices waft out of a Vietnamese medicine store, down a hall and past a restaurant where diners sip tea and eat bowls of pho. Pulsing Vietnamese music plays in the background. It's a scene out of Hanoi - but it's really a suburban Washington strip mall that has become a hub for the burgeoning Vietnamese community and an example of what's happening elsewhere in the country.

2. This is what REALLY pisses off the "ruling class"
Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 03:48 PM by SoCalDem
They remember "before" the 60's and 70's when the immigrants (from the non white world) flooded in, but they never make the connection.. THEIR FAILED policies and NASTY WARS created those refugees, that congress decided to give sanctuary..

Had the "rulers" kept their grubby little hands to themselves, those people's homelands might have remained habitable, and they would have had no need to come here..

The ruling class creates chaos, and then pretends that they have no clue "what happened"..

These people are the ones who watch the old black & white Capra movies and reminisce about the good ole whitedays, when the only "non-whites" wore maid's or butler's uniforms..

THAT is their agenda.. They know it's wrong, yet they still want it..and they are angry because they cannot have it.

11. Not all are refugees
I realise what you say may apply to the 60s and 70s, but everyone I know who moved to America from Asia in the last generation moved their because of the opportunity and the lifestyle, not to flee oppression caused by America or anyone else. They just love America.

12. I realize that, but the mindset of these people never changes..
I can still remember when the town I lived in, in 1973 started to get a lot of Vietnamese refugees, how the people treated these poor people.. All they wanted was to get away from the war and hardship, and some of the town yahoos were AWFUL to them..

These freaks see ANY Asian person, as having been a "result" of that mass emmigration.

I have a good friend who in Cambodian, and even TODAY, people comment on how little "accent" she has.. She has lived here since she was a little girl, but some people ask about where her family lives.. They live in Pasadena :eyes:

14. You know, you make a valid point.
Remember when whiteAmerica was for anybody but blacks. They encourgae non-white minorities of all ethnic groups except those of African heritage (including those from the Carribean) to come here. Our government gave them all kind of financial and social help (easy-term loans, jobs, all kinds of J-status). In the meantime most in this country continued to deny rights to blacks, and practiced the kind of systemic discrimination that is hard to identify but exists in practice. It always seemed so thoughtless to me, that we shuned the minority that had the cultural background most closely aligned to most of us. Afterall, American black attended our schools, churches, and were really acculturated into white-American mores. American blacks are totally endoctrinated with American values...and yet we continue to embrace those minorities who are most different from our own culture. No wonder it was so easy for the 9/11 group to pull off their attack. We were too busy 'profiling' African-American drivers across the nation and looking for those African-American 'drug trafficers' at the airports.

Life's a bitch, ain't it?

3. suppose that'll be a welcome change
from the group who made up the "fastest-growing major population category" over the previous half-century - namely, complete dumb-ass morons who went from 6.1% of the population in 1950 to 51.4% in 2000.
