WORLD OF BUSINESS POSSIBILITIES: Iraq pitched as the hot place to invest

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Commerce is coming to Detroit today with a sales pitch for area businesses: Beyond the turmoil and violence, Iraq offers a great business opportunity.

The Detroit-Windsor World Trade Center is sponsoring a conference on commercial and contracting opportunities in Iraq at Burton Manor in Livonia. Sam Danou, a Trenton real estate developer who helped organize the event, said about 250 area businessmen are to attend.

The conference comes as two of the largest subcontractors operating in Iraq, General Electric and Siemens, have suspended their operations in the country after kidnappings, convoy ambushes and car bombings.
