Dazzling entry for new EU members
The biggest expansion of the European Union is being celebrated across the continent with huge street parties, concerts and firework displays.
The festivities kicked off at the stroke of midnight in Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Six central European countries followed suit an hour later, at midnight in Brussels (2200 GMT).

The EU's expansion to 25 members makes it the world's biggest trading bloc with a population of 455 million.

Hundreds of thousands packed city squares in the newcomer states. Fireworks lit up the night sky as Beethoven's Ode to Joy - the EU's official anthem - rang out.

2. Overtime, I think there is a going to be a trend to more integrated
regional economies. China supporting Taiwan/Japan/So Korea, EC using eastern Europe as their lowcost labor center, and probably a trend toward Central/So. America supplying North America.

Could be wrong, but this seems to be a logical progression.

Since I'm 50 miles from Brussels in the countryside, I didn't see the festivities, but was happy nonetheless.

Good thread!

I'm only a few subway stations from the local festivities, but I visited during daytime. For security considerations BYOB (bring your own booze) isn't allowed, thus a small local private party it is.

On a side note: no riots in Berlin yet, that's a first for an April the 30th. I hope it'll continue this way tomorrow.

Edit: of course the British classification as a "trading bloc" is questionable, but they'll see. ;-)
