Army claims there is more evidence photos were fake (UK)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1208907,00.html

Senior army figures claimed yesterday they had more evidence to suggest that pictures showing troops "torturing" an Iraqi prisoner were a hoax.

~~snip~~

One inconsistency was that the lorry pictured was a Bedford MK. "The MK ... was not deployed by the army to Iraq at all. That vehicle can't operate with the fuel that was available in Iraq."

1. Doesn't seem like it would matter, according to the article...
From the article (near the end):
<snip>
Even if the photos turn out to be fake, defence sources said it did not mean the allegations were untrue, pointing out that the unit was already being investigated. "We welcome the inquiry; we want to get to the bottom of this," a source said.
<snip>

Photos or no photos, there's something rotten going on.

6. Well it's UK soldiers who provided the story
so "our boyz" are seriously flawed. Not only are they torturers according to Amnesty Int and HR Watch, but we have another totally authentic bunch of photos from 9 months ago depicting sexual assaults and torture. So they are liars and torturers! That is worse, not better.

2. No shit
The pictures that the Mirror published looked fake. They probably are.

Does that mean that abuses didn't take place? Of course not.

The stupidity of the people that took Mirror photos as gospel is unbelievable. All that was required was a bit of patience but nooooo, you had to jump on the bandwagon immediately possibly fatally damaging your cause.

Genuine abuses will now be swept under the same rug.

3. 2 definite sets of pictures...
US ones, which no one is debating are real, and UK ones, which appear to be faked?

On a side note, I love this: "The row over the veracity or otherwise of the images showed no sign of diminishing as MPs called on Geoff Hoon, the defence secretary, to make a statement today in the Commons.

In Cyprus, where the Queen's Lancashire Regiment is based, members were said to be furious at the apparent besmirching of their reputation. "

What american paper these days would get away with 'veracity' and 'besmirching' of reputations?

4. You can bet your sweet ass that the U.S. along with the U.K.
put fake photos in with the real ones. And then come out with a "Hoax Charge" to lesson or deaden the pain of being caught.

Sorry! it won't wash, only the freepers will believe this garbage

Cover Up!!

5. The Brits are simply cleverer at covering their tracks than *

Plenty of REAL photos out there with REAL soldiers up on charges & REAL soldiers blowing the whistle and turning those photos in.

Seems there's quite a little underground forced-porno industry being run in Iraq.

Nope. Sorry Blair. You're going down. Down, down, down...

ALL THAT LOVELY OIL is FOREVER lost to the UK. You guys can't fake and photoshop photos fast enough to kill this scandal :)

7. It is interesting how people parse photos now
I think the big difference between the U.S. photos and the U.K. photos is that the American photos show the faces of the soldiers, and so can be ultimately traced that way. I think if that were not the case, we would be hearing claims that the U.S. photos couldn't possibly be real because:
- the army doesn't issue green gloves
- some insignia looks incorrect
- the woman is too short to work in interrogations
- etc.

It seems to me that these nitpicky things about the British photos have been addressed in yesterday's Mirror. However, it is very likely that various intelligence agencies will, or already have, release fake photos to muddy the waters.

8. I think the US faked the UK pictures so they'd either...
...shift blame to others (which has been not only a popular feature of this war, but a popular feature of Bush's entire polical career) or, if discovered, they hoped they could confuse in people's minds the British and the American pictures.

9. Occams I'm afraid
I think the Mirror published fake photos (which they knew were fakes) because Piers Morgan is a prick.

10. I agree with you, but....
You missed out "publicity-seeking" in your description of Piers Morgan.

11. Afghan POWs shot through walls of containers and then buried alive
The convoy of death is getting a mention. Good that the murder of those helpless men is not forgotten.

they were honest photos. The Mirror does not make up stories. They do cover stories that are early breaking and therefore have a higher chance of not panning out.
