GOP convention security perimeter drawn
GOP convention security perimeter drawn

May 5, 2004  |  NEW YORK (AP) -- Midtown Manhattan around the site of the Republican National Convention could be locked down for blocks, with major avenues closed and nearby residents and workers required to show identification, officials said Tuesday as they outlined tentative security plans for the four-day event.

Such plans could thwart at least one major demonstration at which anti-war protesters plan to march past convention headquarters at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 29, the day before the convention begins.

Mike Miller, the director of convention operations, told reporters at a briefing Tuesday that the Secret Service and city police would sweep the area and lock it down the Friday or Saturday before the gathering.

Nearly 20 groups have contacted the police department about permits that would allow them to march and rally outside Madison Square Garden and at other sites around the city.

1. *giggle* Yeah, right
They think they will be able to keep a million protesters away from Madison Square Garden?

That's very funny.

4. What would happen...
if every homeless person in NYC were to occupy a grate inside the security perimeter in the week before the convention?

6. I hope that Bloomberg charges the RNC for the additional cost
and that local businesses do the same.. For a political party to shut down local commerce for close to a week is unconscionable. Of course, the police will be getting big time overtime, so they will not mind, but for the local citizens who object to the republican "invasion", it will be intolerable..

Now that the primaries are over, we should just start switching registration to R, pick up those George Bush signs and show up as "followers"...what could they do when we "peel off the outer sign" to reveal the "true" one..?? (rhetorical question.. they would probably throw us all out :(..)

The only real consolation, is that his little dog and pony show will not convince any "new" people to actually vote for him :)

7. If the protests have to kick off in the S. Bronx, they will
They can't keep the protesters completely off Manhattan Island. If one million protesters get on the island and start marching, they will not be able to stop them from getting to any destination they decide to march to.

8. This is just,...so,...not good.
The more actions they take to restrict/suppress/confine the voices of the American people (which constitutes actions TOTALLY AGAINST "freedom" and "democracy"), the more fuel they give for a full-blown revolution.

*sigh* Oh, well. I suppose this country is due for that revolution. I hope it doesn't get too ugly though.

10. Next step isn't violence. It's national strikes.
Next step would be national strikes. People would just stay home from work and corporate America watches it's profits go away.

It could start with one-day sick-outs.

in solidarity with the New Yorkers who are "locked down" and can't get to their work/school/business.

12. STRIKE!!!--I've been thinking about this for awhile.
A general strike would be a tremendous way to make some waves.

Stay home from work, buy nothing, consume nothing. Refuse, if only for one day, to participate in the great soulless machine.

Nothing like hitting these bastards in the wallet. It's the only place they have any feeling.

I know the blogoshpere/online community isn't nearly as large or important as we llike to think it is, but is this something that could be spread across the liberal community and maybe catch fire?

If anyone would like to move this idea into its own thread, please do so. I'm too new to have thread-starting rights.

21. Bad idea.
Most people will hang on to their jobs. A strike would mean dismisal. How stupid is that? Oh Btw blogs really suck.

19. Exactly! Penn Station - every AMTRAK train, NJRR, NY Subways
All have stations under the Garden. They can't close Penn Station for a week. It's absolutlely impossible.

20. Well, then, you know what protestors need to do?
Edited on Wed May-05-04 11:23 AM by calimary
Go swamp the CNN building, the CBS headquarters, ABC News, NBC's compound - surround Rockefeller Plaza - the Associated Press world headquarters is there, too - at 50 Rock, Pox news just down the street, EVERYTHING. We probably should have done this three or four years ago.

GET THE MEDIA!

That's probably the only way we'll get attention in this situation. Any other protests won't be close enough to get coverage. So GO AROUND IT!!! Take the battle to them.

That's what we're supposed to be doing with them terr-ists, anyway, isn't it??

28. I've advocated that for years now
If the news won't cover protests blocade the news, make them look. The fucking pukes don't give a shit, they'll call in the scoops, dump all protesters in barbed wire compounds, and nobody will know about it.
Target the media.
