U.S. Unveils Report Promoting Democracy
By GEORGE GEDDA
Associated Press Writer

May 17, 2004, 10:17 AM EDT

WASHINGTON -- After weeks of international condemnation of American mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners, the State Department on Monday unveiled a report highlighting its worldwide efforts over the past year to promote democracy and human rights.

The report summarizes actions in 101 countries intended to advance press and religious freedom and to end trafficking in persons as well as torture.

"Advancing human rights and democracy around the world not only reflects our nation's deepest values, it is profoundly within our interests," Secretary of State Colin Powell said in the preface to the report.

The report, entitled "Supporting Human Rights and Democracy, The U.S. Record 2003-2004," was to have been released two weeks ago but was delayed because of printing problems and what officials described as the furor over the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners.

1. Bush advancing democracy???
that's like the Pope advancing devil worship...

Unless of course they mean "democracy", as in, whatever right wingers want is good and democratic, but whatever leftists or moderate centrists want is bad and communistic...

What bullshit!!

2. Did is mention our supporting coups in Venezuala and Haiti?
Or our support for dictators in Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, etc.

The only time we fully support democracy is when the democracy is extremely right-wing. If it's even marginally socialist we'd rather have a dictator.

6. Yes, and because we haven't been caught
yet torturing anyone in these 101 countries, that should say something good about us, right? :silly:
