Schwarzenegger shies from Bush campaign
As President Bush (news - web sites) spends more time on the campaign trail, there is one prominent and popular Republican virtually silent in his support for the president: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites).

The presidential campaign season typically finds governors rushing to the side of their party's president, cozying up to the glamour of motorcades, wealthy donors and rapt supporters. But with his own movie-star allure and significant political disputes with Bush, Schwarzenegger has kept the president notably at arm's length.

The governor has not traveled to battleground states to campaign for Bush. Neither has he forcefully attacked Bush's likely Democratic challenger, Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts. Even though he is an honorary co-chairman of Bush's reelection campaign, Schwarzenegger rarely comments on the president's performance.

Arnold is smarter than Bush.

Who ever would have thought that the President of the United States would be dumber than body-builder turned actor? *And* a less astute politician.

10. actually, I think Arnold is quite an astute politician
Whether you like him or not, he has proven himself to be a very savvy politician. He hasn't even been in office for a year and he's already stunned everyone here in California with the political cunning he's shown. He's managed to get his ballot initiatives passed and get the cooperation of the overwhelmingly Democratic state legislatures. And his ratings among voters are quite solid.

Yes, I think Arnold is a very astute politician..... and for precisely that reason, I think it is not a good sign when he's distancing himself from the Chimperor.

22. Actually, der gropenator is quite a smart individual.
Considering how far he has come from where he started.

Read biographies of him - simply amazing.

He is VERY intelligent and has succeeded beyond everyone's wildest imaginations in everything he has done.

Too bad he's also a collosal egotistical ass pig.

8. Guess he's not as dumb as he looks
Ahh-nuld, I mean.

And, in a contest between Ahh-nuld and a pretzel, the pretzel would lose.

Are the Bush*ies now having second thoughts about amending the Constitution so he can be pResident? Hmmm?

11. My greatest fear averted...
My largest (I know I'm gonna get pummeled) fear with Arnold as Governor of my state was that he'd use his political power to campaign non-stop for George Jr. in 2004. If that doesn't happen, I'll be greatly releaved.

Ok if we run hillary who do they have? arnold, jeb , and condi and colin, who are black and see if the rank and file go for that. I don't live in california so i know very little about his actions the last say 90 days. Seems like hes been acting more like the president already

17. Arnold cannot run unless the Constitution is changed. If he does, no loss
Edited on Mon May-17-04 06:40 PM by Democat
If Arnold is the future of the Republican Party, then the liberals are winning in America because he is far more liberal than the current crooks running the GOP.

In some ways, Arnold is a win-win for the left. He would push the Republican party so far left, that even in defeat we would have a major victory. Somebody is going to run against a Democrat in every presidential election. Better Arnold beating a Democrat than some right wing religious nut like Bush.

Look how the religious right has been marginalized in California because of Arnold's victory.

19. Just because he's not a fundie doesn't mean he's a liberal repug
He's gutting social programs left and right--union busting is next on his agenda. He's a repug, all right--he wouldn't be much of an "improvement" if you ask me, and he's certainly not an indication that we're "winning" anything.

30. He is more liberal than the alternative Republicans
In California, Arnold is a lot more liberal than almost all of the other major Republican candidates who have run for office in the last couple of elections.

When we are able to push the Republican party to the left, then we certainly are winning. That is a victory in itself, in the same way that the Republicans pushing the Democrats to the right is a victory for them.

Part of the war is to determine where the middle is and every time we push the center to the left, we win a little. When they push the center to the right, we lose a little.

32. I guess we disagree on whether we've pushed them at all...
I haven't seen one single thing out of Arnold's tenure to date that indicates he's anything but a hardcord republican. He's played coy on gender issues (the equivalent of a non-answer), but he's hardly been a champion of GLBT or women's rights. I'm honestly not looking for a fight here, but I am seriously interested in what you think Arnold has done that indicates he's in any way more liberal than his fellow CA republicans. I see NO victories for us at all here.

28. The same people who engineered the recall of Davis
are considering initiating a recall of the mayor of San Jose because the mayor supported a domestic partner initiative.

I think recalls should be allowed only in extreme cases because they favor the people who have money and they subvert democratically elected officials.

For example, a columnist in the San Jose Mercury News pointed out that the mayor of San Jose may make safe decisions rather than honest hard decisions just so he won't lose a recall election.
