Top brass knew all about prison attacks, claims shamed soldier

By Pippa Crerar

IRAQI prisoners crawled over broken glass wearing only sanitary towels, shamed soldier Lynddie England said yesterday.

England, 21, said guards who ordered the pain and humiliation took pictures 'because we thought it looked funny'.

But the American soldier, pictured pointing and laughing at naked prisoners, insists the abuse went all the way to the top in the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.

She told investigators probing the scandal: 'The pictures were shown to anyone who wanted to see them.

1. "we were doing what we were told"
there it is again.
"we were just following orders."
sounds familiar.

14. That's no excuse
...as we well know. But the point is, they probably WERE just following orders, while b* and co. are trying to sell this as just a few "bad apples". When is the media going to admit that this goes right to the top?

2. They were such a busy crew, weren't they?
IF you wracked your brain for ages, how long would it take to come up with the old, "crawling on hands and knees across broken glass" stunt?

This is unbearable.

From later in the article:
Meanwhile, Iraqi forces said last night they had arrested four men allegedly involved in the kidnap and murder of American Nick Berg.

But al-Qaeda kingpin Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, who claimed responsibility for the gruesome decapitation of Berg, 26, which was videoed and posted on the internet, is not among them.
(snip)
Obviously, Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, with his artificial leg, must have raced away before they could catch him.

Echoing what another DU'er has already posted, no doubt it's going to be a lot harder convincing Iraqii "insurgents" to put down their guns and come along to prison.

12. Hate to put in a bit of poison here, but as a retired military person
I resent that comment. I think it is uncalled for, and it is just as bad as when the right calls us Terrorists or when we were called "baby killers" upon returning to the USA after VietNam.

Cronus, I am sure there is nothing personal, and I certainly have nothing against you, but I thought this should be pointed out.

Not everyone in the military is an "amoral killer" or anything like it.

13. Roger that.
We should keep in mind that the atrocities of Abu Ghraib were only possible due to the actions of vicious, wicked, cold-blooded civilians in our government. Abusing their corrupt power, civilians begat the worst national security disaster in US history.

We should also recall that many (many) in the senior ranks were forced into retirement, reassigned out of the way, etc. in order to push the civilians' agenda (and several countries into the ground).

But we reasonably do not hold that against "civilians" in general. You know, in both there are the good and the bad. And the ugly gang currently torturing the planet.

5. Oh, Please
SNIP:
England added she didn't think guards should be punished because 'we did what we were told'.
END SNIP

Sorry, darling, we've heard the Nuremburg defense before and that dog won't hunt. Even if you were ordered, you had some major moral disconnect thinking other people's suffering was funny.

6. This is a blatant lie.
England, 21, said guards who ordered the pain and humiliation took pictures 'because we thought it looked funny'.

According to Sy Hersh, the pics were to be used as blackmail to flip freed detainees to become informants.

It wasn't as 'innocent' as England is (poorly) attempting to persuade people to believe.

8. How did they catch
the people so quick who did the Berg killing? Far as I could see, they were pretty well covered with clothes from head to toe.

10. It's pretty easy to do when you set up the killing.
Okay, I'll be generous - Berg probably died under interrogation at Abu Ghraib, and someone decided to make lemonade.
